DAYTON, Ohio - The IUPUI volleyball team ran into a buzzsaw on Friday night (Oct. 8) as Wright State rolled past the Jaguars in straight sets, 25-14, 25-9, 25-11. IUPUI put down just 15 kills and saw the hosts hit .319 for the match in the win.
Allie Pogue was IUPUI's most efficient attacker, putting down four kills on 10 attempts and
Emily Alan added three kills. Celia Powers paced Wright State with 12 kills and Callie Martin added eight kills on 12 attempts for a .667 hitting percentage.
Addie Evans had a team-high nine digs for IUPUI and
Emma Ashcraft collected seven digs.
However, errors were the problem for IUPUI as they committed 27 attack errors and six more at the service line. Wright State (11-6, 3-2 HL) posted nine blocks to help thwart to IUPUI offense, six coming from Nyssa Baker.
Wright State rushed out to leads of 3-1, 9-4 and 12-6 in the opening set and never looked back. An ace from Evans got IUPUI back within four, but WSU responded with three straight points to force head coach
Lindsey Froehlich to call timeout. After the timeout,
Briana Brown came up with a side out, but the Jags couldn't sustain the run as the Raiders responded with a side out of their own.
Maddie Haines added a late kill before WSU closed out the set, 25-14.
The second set went sideways from the start as the Raiders charged out to a quick 5-1 lead to prompt a timeout. The pause didn't quell the hosts though as the lead was pushed to 10-3 and later to 13-5. The Jaguars committed 15 errors during the set and the Raiders earned a side out every time IUPUI was on the service line.
The third set was much of the same as Wright State earned a 6-1 lead and never looked back.
Atlantis Clendenin had an early kill to keep things close, but Wright State continued to refuse to allow long scoring runs, repeatedly coming up with side outs after every IUPUI score.
Brooke Phillips finished with 13 assists and two blocks in the loss.
IUPUI will continue the two-game road trip on Saturday (Oct. 9) when the Jaguars take on Northern Kentucky at 4:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
