JAGUARS UPENDED AT BELMONT, 4-0

IUPUI gives up game-winner just before halftime on the road

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - It appeared as though IUPUI and Belmont would go to the locker room locked in a scoreless tie on Tuesday night (Oct. 5) at Belmont's Rose Park. However, the hosts tallied with just six seconds left before the intermission horn to take a 1-0 lead and carried the momentum the rest of the way in a 4-0 victory.

An ugly goal kickstarted the Belmont attack as the Bruins received a throw-in deep in IUPUI territory in the closing seconds. The hosts scrambled to get the ball in play and a long John Bannec throw was errantly cleared and got to AJ Chastonay inside the IUPUI penalty area, where he angled a shot past Quinn McCallion for the ice breaker.

That came on the heels of back-to-back highlight reel saves from McCallion, who defended an Esteban Leiva attempt in the 35th minute and a Leiva attempt from point blank range in the 40th minute.

The Belmont goal forced IUPUI (2-7-1) to have to commit numbers in the attack in the second half to attempt to get even.

Belmont's Michael Saunders made it 2-0 in the 50th minute when he dribbled through the left side of the IUPUI defense and snuck a shot just inside the near post for his second score of the year. In the 60th minute, Liam O'Brien had a brilliant finish of a cross from the right side, rifling a shot past McCallion in transition.

The Bruins (7-3-1) capped the evening's scoring in the 66th minute when Esteban Lestido blistered a free kick from 25 yards out into the upper left-hand corner of the net.

IUPUI continued to chase a score up until the closing seconds as Logan Finnegan had a free kick pushed over the bar in the 86th minute. In the 87th minute, Tommy Patacca got on the end of a cross, but redirected his header just right of the goal. Junior Carson Shrader also had a shot attempt in the final minute picked up easily by Belmont netminder Drew Romig.

Belmont finished with a 12-7 shot advantage after outshooting IUPUI 8-1 in the opening half. Finnegan led IUPUI with three attempts.

McCallion, seeing his first action since suffering an injury in the regular season opener, made two saves in the loss.

IUPUI will return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 13 when the Jaguars travel to Highland Heights, Ky., to face Northern Kentucky at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.
