HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Four goals ended up in the back of the net in an eight-minute stretch amidst a torrential downpour as IUPUI squared off with Northern Kentucky at the NKU Soccer Stadium on Wednesday night (Oct. 13). Unfortunately for the guests, host NKU tallied three of the four scores and held off a feisty IUPUI attack in the 3-1 win.
IUPUI (2-8-1, 1-5 HL) attempted a season-high 19 shots and earned seven corner kicks, but finished with just the one first half score.
With a driving rain clearly affecting play, NKU (6-7, 4-3 HL) went in front in the 16th minute when Brodie Sallows got loose on a counter and sent a shot past
Lucas Morefield for the game's first goal. IUPUI had an immediate answer when
Logan Finnegan drove a brilliant strike past Daniel Bermingham for his second goal of the season, less than two minutes after NKU's tally.
Gianni Catenacci helped setup the play by sending a pass to
Matthew Skaar, who then laid the ball off to Finnegan for the finish. It was Finnegan's second quality look in the game's early going as he had previously tested Bermingham in the 16th minute.
The game remained level for exactly 67 seconds before Ben Hegge angled a shot past Morefield from the left side, just inside the far post for his third score of the year. The back breaker came in the 24th minute when Jesse Randall scored from nearly the exact same spot from which Hegge had tallied, rolling a shot inside the far post for a two-goal margin.
IUPUI continued to build chances through a combination of corner kicks and long throw-ins deep in NKU territory, but was unable to draw closer. Senior defender
Tommy Patacca just missed on headers in both the 25th and 45th minutes, the second of which came on a restart just before halftime.
As the rain dried up, so did the scoring.
IUPUI controlled pace and possession in the second half, outshooting NKU 10-5 overall and leaving the Norse without a shot on frame. However, the Jaguars put just three of their 10 attempts on target, two of which came from Finnegan and
Chris Workman in an early flurry of action.
Later,
Mandela Cybahiro tried Bermingham from the right side, but hit his attempt right at the NKU keeper. Bermingham finished with six saves in the victory while Morefield had three stops in the defeat.
Finnegan paced IUPUI with five shot attempts while Patacca had three. Both
Cameron Haegele and
Anthony Saporito had two shot attempts each.
IUPUI was credited with 54 percent of the game's possession with more than half coming in the attacking end. However, NKU was largely content to defend in the second half and recycle possession through the midfield.
IUPUI will continue the road swing this weekend when the Jaguars travel to Green Bay on Saturday (Oct. 16) for a match on ESPN+.
