INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI volleyball team hit a season-best .313 and got 19 kills from
Briana Brown for a second straight night as the Jaguars outlasted Robert Morris, 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 20-25, 25-21) inside the Jungle on Saturday (Oct. 30). The IUPUI offense started hot and never truly slowed down as the Jaguars strung together back-to-back wins.
"It feels great, especially at home. To see the execution of some things we worked on this week come together on back-to-back nights - I'm really, really proud of the girls tonight," head coach
Lindsey Froehlich said. "You can tell when it gets quiet, we're a little bit out of rhythm. Once (we) can get our own momentum going and help each other out, they do a good job. And props to our bench for keeping it lively in here."
The Jaguars' offense was raucous all night as Brown hit .364 with 19 kills on 44 attempts and
Millai Madison hit .467 with eight kills from her middle spot.
Emily Alan also had 11 kills and hit .350 while
Maddie Haines notched eight kills.
Robert Morris (9-17, 2-12 HL) hit just .217 in the loss as Madison sparked the IUPUI defense with seven block assists.
After RMU unloaded three straight aces to start the match, Froehlich called timeout a delivered a succinct message to her squad. Brown stopped the run with a kill and the Jags were off and running. They finally took a 12-11 lead on an Alan, followed by an
Allie Pogue kill for a two-point lead. After RMU tied things up at 19 all, Pogue and Madison scored in succession to force a timeout. A halt in play didn't slow things down though as the Jags scored on back-to-back tandem blocks to force another timeout. After the Colonials snuck within one at 24-23, Alan and Brown combined on a block to seal the set.
IUPUI hit .395 in the first set as Brown powered home six early kills.
IUPUI had its most commanding set of the season in the second, hitting .520 as it flipped a 4-3 deficit into a 12-6 lead.
Emma Ashcraft provided some strong service during the run and Alan had consecutive kills with Brown on the service line. Later,
Brooke Phillips helped extend the lead out to 18-11 on an ace before the Jags coasted to a 25-16 victory. The Jags needed just 25 swings to put down 16 kills, paced by Alan and Brown's four each.
The third set was the lone blemish on IUPUI's resume on Saturday as RMU surged out to an 11-4 lead, aided by an illegal rotation on the Jaguars that negated a point. After a nearly 10-minute delay, an IUPUI point was turned in favor of the Colonials. The long pause took the wind out of IUPUI's sails during the set and the Jaguars got no closer than three before ultimately falling 25-20.
IUPUI regained footing in a back-and-forth fourth and final set though as the two teams played to 11 ties and six lead changes. Things were tied at 19 all and 20 all before Phillips came up with a big ace to build a 22-20 lead. After a RMU side out, Pogue followed with a kill of her own to make ti 23-21.
Alli Cook delivered an ace to force match point and Madison and Pogue sealed the win with a block.
"It feels really good. We love this atmosphere," Madison said. "We always want to be fun to watch when we come (home), so it feels good to come home, play in front of our fans and be cheered on by them and get two dubs in one weekend."
Phillips piloted the offense with 45 assists and dialed up three aces, as did Ashcraft from the service line.
Rhiannon Schuenemann had a team-high 14 digs.
IUPUI will continue the four-game homestand next weekend when it hosts Northern Kentucky (Nov. 5) and Wright State (Nov. 6) in the Jungle.
