INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team played visiting Green Bay to a scoreless draw at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Thursday night (Oct. 14), outshooting the guests by a 21-8 margin on an otherwise frustrating evening. The IUPUI defense held Green Bay without a shot on goal as senior goalkeeper
AP Woodall barely needed her gloves to record the shutout.
The Jaguars repeatedly build opportunities and repeatedly misfired or were unable to get off clean looks as only five attempts got to goal. Senior
Elizabeth Bueckers had a team-high five shot attempts and freshman
Paige Waskom attempted four from her midfield position. Sophomore
Sam Slimak had three shot attempts, including hitting a post in the game's opening half.
"It's not what we wanted to have, for sure. We wanted to get three points here at home," head coach
Chris Johnson said. "I thought we created some good opportunities. We just kind of struggled to put that final passing combination together to get us that goal that we need. We were in good places - we're just quite connecting that final third of the field yet."
IUPUI (3-10-2, 2-5-1 HL) controlled possession for nearly 60 percent of the contest and created eight corner kick opportunities. The Jaguars had four shot attempts and two corners before Green Bay (6-1-5, 3-1-4 HL) finally attempted its first in the 20th minute. That came just moments after Slimak hit the outside of the far post after a corner kick opportunity came to her on the far side. Bueckers had a shot cleared off the back line in the 48th minute and both Slimak and Waskom tried to get shots off amongst a scrum inside the penalty area in the game's 52nd minute.
Senior
Renae Blevins just missed with a drive high of target in the 73rd minute and
Hannah Roberson put a bullet on target against Green Bay keeper Annie Mason in the 80th minute, forcing the goalie to the ground to cover the ball after she was unable to corral the initial attempt.
Green Bay nearly got the game-winner in the 92nd minute when Emily Murphy and IUPUI defender
Autumn Weeks converged on a ball near the top of the penalty area. Woodall came out to challenge on the play, but the ball squirted free towards the right post. In a stroke of luck for the Jaguars, the spinning sphere glanced slowly off the post and out for a corner kick. It would be Green Bay's lone shot attempt in 20 minutes of extra time.
IUPUI managed five attempts in the second overtime which included a dazzling Bueckers header from a tough angle in the 105th minute that Mason collected and a drive from Waskom from the right side that flew high in the 103rd minute.
Leah Shumate had a free kick chance from just outside the 18-yard box in the 108th minute, but drove her attempt over the bar.
Murphy led Green Bay with three shot attempts off the bench and Mason collected four saves to keep IUPUI off the scoreboard. The shutout was the ninth of Woodall's career and she extended her personal streak to 234 consecutive minutes without allowing a score.
IUPUI will return to the pitch on Sunday (Oct. 17) when the Jaguars face Robert Morris at 1:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
