JAGUARS DROP FOUR-SET THRILLER TO OAKLAND INSIDE THE JUNGLE

IUPUI wins the initial set before ultimately falling in four

INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI volleyball team had one of its best showings of the season inside the Jungle on Tuesday night (Oct. 12) but ultimately fell short to one of the Horizon League's top teams in Oakland in four sets (24-26, 25-21, 27-25, 25-22). IUPUI won the initial set and lost back-to-back nailbiters before succumbing in the decisive fourth set.
Freshman Briana Brown finished with a team-high 14 kills and Emily Alan had 11 while hitting .348 for the match. Brooke Phillips had 36 assists and a team-high 18 digs and Millai Madison put down eight kills.

Jamie Walling led Oakland (12-7, 6-2 HL) with 17 kills and collected 15 digs and Brittany Welch had 12 kills. Oakland hit .160 for the match while IUPUI was limited to .142 after hitting .294 in the opening set.

"We had a lot of really high highs and a lot of really low lows (tonight)," Alan said. "I feel like if we just even that out, we'll put ourselves in a really good position.

"I think our freshmen are really competing against seniors across the board and it's more about us meshing and building that will help as we go forward."

The highest high came in a come-from-behind win in set one, 26-24. IUPUI trailed 14-10 early and was still down 23-20 after Welch put home a kill for the Golden Grizzlies. However, an Oakland error and Alli Cook ace got the Jags within one and forced an OU timeout. After the timeout, Sidney Veatch and Madison combined on a block to tie the score at 23 all. A service error gave Oakland a side out, but IUPUI countered to tie the score at 24 all. Brown gave the Jags match point with a kill and Addie Evans ended the set with an ace.

"It was awesome," Alan said of the first set win. "To get that feeling of winning something is what we really needed, especially on our home court."

IUPUI led the second set 21-19 late but saw the guests rattle off six straight points with Walling on the service line to tie the match. IUPUI head coach Lindsey Froehlich called two timeouts in short order, but was unable to shake OU down the stretch.

Rather than fold after a tough second set loss, IUPUI came out on fire in set three, building a quick 10-2 lead. Cook served up the first five points, capped by an ace before Oakland got a side out. Then Evans got hot on the service line, dialing up an ace to give IUPUI a large lead. Oakland fired back quickly to get within 14-13 on a Walling kill. IUPUI refused to hand over the lead though, repeatedly getting side outs to maintain the advantage. A late burst got IUPUI to set point at 24-21 with Phillips on the service line. The Golden Grizzlies fought off three set points to make it 24 all before Maddie Haines came up with a crucial kill to take a 25-24 lead. The Jags gave the lead away with a service error and Oakland closed the set with back-to-back points and win 27-25.

It was a crushing blow as Oakland rode the momentum to an 11-5 lead early in the fourth set. The Jags chipped within three behind Brown's hitting from the outside, but Oakland refused to give up additional ground. IUPUI fought off three set points late in the match behind Emma Ashcraft's service game before ultimately falling, 25-22.

The Jags showed an improved defensive effort, collecting 60 digs and 10 blocks as Alan had two solos and four block assists. Sidney Veatch had five block assists and seven kills.

IUPUI will conclude the two-game homestand on Friday (Oct. 15) when the Jaguars host Purdue Fort Wayne at 6:00 p.m. inside The Jungle.
