JAGUARS RETURN HOME TO HOST TWO CONTESTS THIS WEEK

IUPUI (2-17, 0-8 HL) to welcome Oakland and Purdue Fort Wayne this week

10/11/2021 1:18:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI volleyball team will cap the first half of Horizon League play this week when the Jaguars host a pair of matches inside the Jungle. IUPUI will host Oakland on Tuesday night (Oct. 12) and cap the first half when it hosts Purdue Fort Wayne on Friday (Oct. 15). Both matches will begin at 6:00 p.m. In addition, Tuesday night's contest will be aired on ESPN+ as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) calls the action.

IUPUI (2-17, 0-8 HL) has come close, but has still yet to get off the schneid in league play. Head coach Lindsey Froehlich's team has captured at least one set in four of its eight Horizon League contests, including dropping a five-set outcome at Cleveland State to kickoff a recent five-game stretch away from home.

Brooke Phillips ranks among the Horizon League leaders in assists/set (8.04) and service aces (0.45/set) while Rhiannon Schuenemann is tenth in the league at 3.47 digs/set. However, a young IUPUI offense has struggled to score as freshman Briana Brown averages a team-high 2.93 kills/set and Allie Pogue puts home 2.31 kills/set. Maddie Haines (2.30 kills/set) and Emily Alan (2.14 kills/set) both put down better than two per set with Alan hitting .190 from her middle spot. Collectively, IUPUI hits just .106 while opponents are hitting .226 for the season.

In league play, freshman Addie Evans has assumed the libero duties and ranks fifth in the league at 4.17 digs/set.

Brown recently registered her seventh double-double of the season with 10 kills and 11 digs at Northern Kentucky over the weekend. Brown has a pair of matches with at least 20 kills this season and has double-doubles in two of her most three recent contests.

SCOUTING OAKLAND (11-7, 5-2 HL)
Oakland is 5-2 in Horizon League play and had a six-game non-conference winning streak earlier this season. The Golden Grizzlies are riding a two-game winning streak with back-to-back wins over UIC and Green Bay. Jamie Walling, the younger sister of former IUPUI middle Logan Walling, leads the Oakland attack at 3.33 kills/set and hits .269. AnnaBelle Tomei has a team-high 389 assists and defensively Lindsay Wightman averages a team-high 5.27 digs/set. Oakland boasts a strong block in Jessica Riedl (65.0), Kerra Cornist (60.0) and Walling (55.0).

SCOUTING PURDUE FORT WAYNE (4-17, 2-6 HL)
Purdue Fort Wayne enters this week at 4-17 overall and 2-6 in Horizon League play. All four of the Mastodons wins have come away from home this season. Katie Crowe averages a team-high 3.45 kills/set and 3.93 points/set while Maggie Castleman puts down 2.50 kills/set. Defensively, Rachael Crucis collects a team-high 3.89 digs/set and Ramei Jackson has a team-high 62.0 blocks.
