MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - Junior
Bobby Harvey tallied a career-high 18 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead three Jaguars in double-digits, but host Milwaukee shot a sizzling 53 percent overall and 57 percent from three-point range to roll past the Jaguars, 94-70 on Friday (Jan. 8). It marked IUPUI's first road game of the season while Milwaukee (4-2, 3-1 HL) was hosting its first game of the year after opening with five contests on the road.
Junior
Azariah Seay tossed in 12 points in his first career start and
Jaylen Minnett closed with 11 points in the loss. Senior
Marcus Burk was harassed into a 3-of-17 shooting day to close with nine points and senior forward
Elyjah Goss finished with eight points and eight rebounds.
Milwaukee's Tafari Simms scored a career-high 32 points on 10-of-13 shooting and hit 5-of-6 three-point attempts to pace the victors. Deandre Gholston contributed 15 points and Te'Jon Lucas added 14 points and eight assists for the Panthers.
Milwaukee connected on 13-of-23 (56.5 percent) three-point tries as seven different Panthers made at least one attempt. The Jags shot 42 percent for the game and 8-of-27 (29.6 percent) from three-point range.
IUPUI (1-3, 0-3 HL) emerged from a 14-point first half hole to take a brief lead early in the second half, thanks in large part to Harvey. The Panthers went in front 30-16 at the 8:19 mark before the break when Simms scored in close to cap a 9-1 run. Minnett, who came off the bench for the second time in as many games, got the Jags going with back-to-back contested treys before IUPUI eventually closed within 44-38 by halftime.
The Jags were the better team at the start of the second half as Harvey hit a pair of early triples, the second of which cut Milwaukee's lead to one. Later, IUPUI scored six straight points to take a 50-49 lead, capped by a
Bakari LaStrap transition basket with 15:16 to play.
However, Milwaukee continued to connect from all over the floor and buried the Jags with a long-range arsenal.
A 10-1 Milwaukee rally made it 61-53 with 12:20 to play after Deandre Gholston hit a pair of free throws. IUPUI crept back within five at 69-64 when Harvey hit a tough runner, but Milwaukee unloaded a knockout blow with 19 straight points over the game's next five-plus minutes.
Simms opened the run with a three and Devon Hancock followed with a three of his own after Burk had missed at the other end. Simms delivered again with 7:43 left as Milwaukee ultimately outscored IUPUI 25-6 over the final 9:43 of the contest.
Sophomore
Mike DePersia had five points and four assists with no turnovers as IUPUI committed a season-low 13 miscues.
The same two teams will compete again on Saturday (Jan. 9) at 11:00 a.m. Central (12 p.m. Eastern) inside Klotsche Center as that contest will be broadcast on ESPN3.
