MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - Senior
Jaylen Minnett tallied a season-high 24 points, including four threes, and classmate
Elyjah Goss registered his second double-double of the season with 10 points and 13 boards, but the Jags fell on the road at Milwaukee on Saturday (Jan. 9), 71-63.
Marcus Burk added 15 points in the loss as the Jaguars connected on 10-of-25 (40 percent) from three-point range. Te'Jon Lucas led Milwaukee (5-2, 3-1 HL) with 15 points, five boards and four assists and Josh Thomas contributed 14 points and seven rebounds for the victors.
IUPUI (1-4, 0-4 HL) led 57-56 with 7:36 to play after Minnett drained a pair of free throws, but DeAndre Gholston and Thomas scored back-to-back buckets to give the hosts a three-point advantage. Burk cut the lead back to one when he arced in an 18-footer, but Lucas matched him with a tough fallaway at the other end.
The Jags were unable to get enough stops late as Milwaukee scored on seven of its final nine possessions to seal the win. The Panthers shot 56 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Jags 33-28. Milwaukee was particularly tough on the interior, outscoring the Jaguars 34-16 in the paint.
IUPUI opted to shelve the short game and bomb away from deep, particularly in the first half. Head coach Byron Rimm's squad connected on eight first half trifectas while playing uphill for much of the opening 20 minutes. Burk connected on a long three on the Jaguars' opening possession before Milwaukee scored the game's next 11 points. The Panthers pushed the lead out as large as 10 on three different occasions before the break, but IUPUI used a late 10-0 to tie the score.
Junior
Bobby Harvey opened the 10-0 run by swishing a three and
Nathan McClure followed by draining his first three of the campaign from the right wing. After a defensive stand, Minnett drew a foul and splashed both free throws to make it 36-34. The Jags then pulled even when Goss dropped in a right-handed hook from in close with 59 seconds left in the half. Milwaukee capped the half with back-to-back Lucas jumpers sandwiched around a Minnett layup to make it 40-38 at halftime.
The positive momentum carried over into the second half as an early 12-0 IUPUI run helped to build a 50-43 lead. Burk sparked the run with a jumper and it was followed by a pair of Minnett free throws. Burk then followed by drilling an open three and
Mike DePersia converted a three-point play on a drive down the left side. After forcing another turnover, Burk connected on a runner to extend the IUPUI lead.
MKE's Donovan Newby snapped the four minute drought by drilling a corner three, which opened an 8-0 run for the hosts.
"The last eight minutes of the game in every game decides it," Goss said. "For us, it's about putting a complete game together instead of just a 32 or 34 minute game."
Minnett moved to No. 14 on IUPUI's all-time scoring list, upping his all-time total to 1,185 and overtaking both Odell Bradley (1,170) and Charles Price (1,182) on Saturday. It was his 12th game of 20 points or more in his four-year career. Meanwhile, Goss recorded his 17th career double-double and continued to bear down on the program's career rebounding record. With 13 caroms on Saturday, he ended the day with 730 career boards, trailing Don Carlisle by 39 for the career record.
IUPUI will return to action next week when it travels to Northern Kentucky for a pair of games inside NKU's BB&T Arena on Friday (Jan. 15) and Saturday (Jan. 16). Both contests will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. and be broadcast on ESPN3.
