INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI basketball team got stellar efforts from its seniors on Friday (Jan. 29) as the Jaguars outlasted Milwaukee, 73-68, inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum.
Marcus Burk tallied a game-high 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting and
Elyjah Goss notched his third double-double of the season with 13 points and 15 rebounds. In doing so, Goss became the program's all-time leader in boards midway through the second half, surpassing the total of IUPUI Hall of Famer Don Carlisle.
Senior
Jaylen Minnett chimed in with 14 points and four assists in the victory.
Te'Jon Lucas led Milwaukee (6-6, 5-5 HL) with 20 points, seven boards and four assists and DeAndre Gholston and Amir Allen both finished with 10 points.
IUPUI (4-6, 3-6 HL) scored eight straight points to take a 60-59 lead out to a 68-59 advantage with 4:02 remaining. Minnett played a role in all eight points, spotting
Nathan McClure for an open three and then scoring five of his own, beginning with a tough left-handed layup. He then drilled a step back three, the 264th of his collegiate career, to extend the lead.
Milwaukee fired back with seven straight of their own to make it a one-possession game, capped by a Donovan Newby corner three with 1:14 left.
After IUPUI had an empty possession, Lucas misfired on a contested three and Goss was thrown to the ground in a scramble for the rebound. After a lengthy review and a common foul call, Goss split the two free throws to extend the lead to three.
The Jags then secured the win with another strong defensive stand as Lucas missed a well contested jumper and Burk plucked the board before racing through traffic and drawing a foul with 4.8 seconds left. The Indianapolis-native iced the win by swishing a pair of foul shots, making it a two-possession game.
"It feels great. The win makes it even better. I give all the glory to God to have all the records I have accomplished at IUPUI," Goss said afterwards. "That's something I will always hold close to my heart."
Led largely by Goss, IUPUI pulled a rare feat in capturing the win by easily outrebounding the Panthers, 42-31, and outshooting the guests. The Jags finished at 42.9 percent while Milwaukee closed at 42.6 percent.
The Jags rode 14 offensive boards to a 15-9 advantage in second chance points. Goss grabbed six offensive rebounds and four of McClure's six caroms came off the offensive glass. Goss also swatted three shots and drew seven fouls, working against Milwaukee's front line.
The win snapped a four-game skid overall and a four-game skid against Milwaukee. IUPUI dropped a pair of contests to Milwaukee earlier this month on the road, but returned the favor on Saturday.
Sophomore
Mike DePersia closed with eight points and six rebounds and junior
Bobby Harvey had five points and four rebounds off the bench.
IUPUI and Milwaukee will meet for the fourth time this season on Saturday (Jan. 30) when they tip-off at 3:00 p.m. inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum. That contest can be seen on ESPN3 as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) and IUPUI Hall of Famer Bob Lovell (analyst) are on the call.
