JAGUARS DROP SATURDAY TILT TO MILWAUKEE, 83-76

Senior Jaylen Minnett pumps in a season-high 26 points in defeat

INDIANAPOLIS - Senior Jaylen Minnett scored a season-high 26 points and classmate Marcus Burk added 19, but it wasn't enough as the Jaguars fell to Milwaukee on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 30), 83-76. Senior Elyjah Goss registered his fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 14 rebounds in the loss.

DeAndre Gholston led four Milwaukee players in double-digits with 24 points on 8-of-15 shooting and Te'Jon Lucas closed with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the victors. Milwaukee (7-6, 6-5 HL) shot 67 percent from the floor in the second half to close the game at 49 percent while the Jaguars limped to season-low 32 percent shooting for the game.

It was most apparent down the stretch as the Jaguars were unable to get defensive stops while Milwaukee got key field goals at key times.

Milwaukee led 70-62 with 5:58 to play after C.J. Wilbourn splashed an open jumper from the right side before the Jags countered with an 8-0 run. Nathan McClure made two after drawing a foul on a drive and after a Wilbourn turnover, the hosts came up with a four-point possession. Lucas was called for a flagrant foul when he struck McClure while fighting through a screen, leading to two shots and the ball. McClure made both tries and Goss was fouled on the ensuing trip and made his two attempts as well.

After Burk missed a potential go-ahead three, Goss tied the score when he scored in close off a Minnett assist. Milwaukee responded with buckets from Wilbourn and Gholston on their next two offensive trips and never relinquished the lead.

The Panthers scored on seven of their final eight possessions of the game to collect the win. Wilbourn finished with 11 points and eight boards and Donovan Newby added 10 points.

Despite the shooting struggles, the Jags still positioned themselves in a spot to win in part due to a 25-of-29 day (86.2 percent) at the free throw line and by outscoring the Panthers 27-18 behind the three-point line.

Burk and Minnett combined to score the Jaguars' first 23 points of the game before Dimitri Georgiadis hit two free throws at the 7:43 mark. With Burk and Minnett firing on all cylinders early the Jags built a quick 19-6 lead marking their first double-digit lead since the season opener against Tennessee State.

Georgiadis and Azariah Seay helped shoulder the scoring load over the final few minutes until Minnett hit a tough hanging jumper in the final minute to set the halftime score at 35-29. Minnett hit half of his 10 first half attempts and scored 14 points before the break while Burk tallied 11 in the first half.

The second half was more challenging offensively for the Jags as they made just 10-of-35 shot attempts and Burk and Minnett were a combined 6-for-23 after the break. McClure tallied a season-high nine points, including a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line. and Georgiadis finished with five points and four boards in his most productive minutes of the campaign.

The loss dropped IUPUI to 1-3 against Milwaukee this season in a rare four-game schedule.

IUPUI will return to action next week when the Jaguars hit the road to face Green Bay in a two-game series. Game one will be played on Friday, Feb. 5 at 7:00 p.m., followed by a Saturday contest at 5:00 p.m.. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN3.
