BURK PUMPS IN 32 IN JAGUARS HOME LOSS TO WRIGHT STATE

Senior Marcus Burk tallies a season-high 32 points and five rebounds in defeat

INDIANAPOLIS - Senior Marcus Burk scored a season-high 32 points on 13-of-20 shooting on Saturday (Jan. 23) but it was hardly enough as Wright State put six players in double-digits to breeze past the Jaguars, 100-72 inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum.

Grant Basile led Wright State in scoring for the second consecutive game of the series with 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting and both Tanner Holden and Tim Finke closed with 16 apiece.

"We just have to have more energy," Burk said. "We can't wait to get everyone going at the same time."

Wright State (11-4, 9-3 HL) shot 56 percent from the field and connected on 13-of-27 (48.1 percent) from three-point range. On the opposite end, IUPUI closed at 45 percent overall and 6-of-20 from three. The visiting Raiders used their overwhelming size to outrebound IUPUI 40-25 and outscore the Jaguars in the paint by a 38-22 margin. The Raiders also converted 10 offensive rebounds into 20 second chance points.

IUPUI's (3-6, 2-6 HL) points came almost exclusively from guards as Jaylen Minnett tossed in 12 points and four assists and Azariah Seay chimed in with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting off the bench.

Burk was the lone Jaguar to find the range in the opening half, scoring 14 of IUPUI's first 18 points before Minnett and Bobby Harvey contributed to the total just before halftime. Minnett hit back-to-back short jumpers just before the break to make it 41-27. On the flip side, Wright State shot 43 percent and got 12 points apiece from Basile and Holden in the opening half.

IUPUI fell behind early as Wright State pumped in an avalanche of threes from Basile, Trey Calvin and Jaylon Hall. The Raiders pushed the lead to 27-16 near the midpoint of the first half when Loudon Love scored on a short jumper. The Jags got back within nine when Burk hit a pull-up off a Mike DePersia feed, but WSU scored the game's next six points and maintained a double-digit lead over the final 27 minutes.

Burk stuck two early jumpers at the start of the second half to pull IUPUI within 10, but a 14-2 WSU run ended any suspense for the second half. Wright State shot a blistering 73 percent in the second half, hitting 19-of-26 field goal attempts and 8-of-12 three-point attempts.

Despite IUPUI's best efforts, shooting 55 percent after halftime, they were still outscored by 14 after the break.

DePersia closed with five points and four assists and Elyjah Goss added four points and 10 boards. Bobby Harvey added five points and three boards off the Jaguars' bench.

It was Burk's fifth career 30-point game in an IUPUI uniform, putting him at 853 points in just 41 games (20.8 ppg). The Indianapolis-native is averaging 24 points per game over the Jaguars' past four outings.

IUPUI will continue the current four-game homestand next week when it hosts Milwaukee in a two-game series inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum. Friday's game with the Panthers will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. and be followed by a Saturday game at 3:00 p.m.. Milwaukee swept a two-game series in Milwaukee earlier this season. Both contests will be broadcast on ESPN3 as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) and IUPUI Hall of Famer Bob Lovell (analyst) will describe the action from courtside. As per Horizon League COVID protocols, no fans will be allowed to attend any league contests this season.
