INDIANAPOLIS - Visiting Wright State put five players in double-digits and shot 57 percent from the floor as the Raiders rolled past IUPUI inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Friday (Jan. 22), 95-65. Senior
Jaylen Minnett led the Jaguars with 17 points, including three threes, and
Marcus Burk chimed in with 14 points off the bench. Freshman
Bakari LaStrap tallied a season-high 10 points off the bench.
Grant Basile led Wright State (10-4, 8-3 HL) with 24 points on 8-of-11 shooting as the Raiders plowed their way through the undersized Jaguars on the interior. Loudon Love contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds and Tanner Holden closed with 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting.
IUPUI (3-5, 2-5 HL) struggled to find an offensive flow early with Burk hidden away for COVID protocols. The Jaguars' top scorer was unable to suit up and didn't appear until the start of the second half while he awaited clearance to play.
By the time Burk was cleared for takeoff, Wright State had built a 46-28 halftime bulge by limiting IUPUI to just 34 percent before the break. Minnett scored nine first half points, albeit on 1-of-6 shooting from deep, and only four different IUPUI players scored in the opening stanza.
IUPUI trailed 38-28 with 2:53 left before halftime when LaStrap scored on a drive after a
Sawyer Stoltz blocked shot. However, the Raiders scored the final eight points of the first half on threes from Jaylon Hall and Trey Calvin sandwiched around a Basile layup.
The Raiders authored the knockout blow at the start of the second half, scoring the opening seven points before Burk stopped the run with a pull-up jumper. IUPUI got as close as 18 after halftime when
Acton Shirley got loose for a two-handed dunk off a find from LaStrap, but the Jags were unable to mount any momentum or make a serious run in the second half.
Burk scored an efficient 14 points in just 17 minutes on 6-of-9 shooting and LaStrap closed with 10 points, five boards and two assists.
Elyjah Goss, who collected two early personal fouls and was sidelined for much of the first half, finished with six points and seven rebounds against WSU's much beefier front line. Sophomore
Mike DePersia chimed in with seven points.
IUPUI, which came in leading the Horizon League and ranking among the nation's best in terms of forcing turnovers, saw WSU commit just eight turnovers on Friday, leading to just nine Jaguar points. The Raiders outrebounded IUPUI 44-32 and outscored the Jaguars in the paint, 52-32.
The same two teams will cap the two-game series on Saturday at noon inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum with coverage beginning on ESPN3 at the top of the hour. Greg Rakestraw (pxp) and IUPUI Hall of Famer Bob Lovell (analyst) will be on the call.
