INDIANAPOLIS – After one of the best seasons in school history, IUPUI women's basketball was rewarded in the league awards, earning six different honors, the league announced on Monday (March 2). The biggest haul came for junior Macee Williams who was named Horizon League Player of the Year for the second-straight year, as well as First Team All-League and All-Defensive Team.
Head Coach Austin Parkinson was tabbed Coach of the Year for the second time in the last three years and the third time in his career. Senior Holly Hoopingarner was named Second Team All-League and redshirt sophomore Rachel McLimore earned a spot on the Third Team All-League.
After winning Player of the Year a season ago, Williams takes home the honor again, leading the league with 17.8 points per game, the most for a Jaguar since 2002. She also finished second in the league with 8.9 rebounds per game. During conference play, Williams upped her scoring to 19.7 points per game, finishing three points higher than the second-leading scorer. Williams shot over 63% from the floor during league play.
Williams also earned a spot on the First Team All-League squad and nabbed an All-Defensive Team selection as the anchor of the Jags defense that allowed a league-low 55.6 points during league play and 57.2 points per game over the season.
"I am incredibly proud of Macee meeting and exceeding the expectations put on her at the beginning of the year," said Parkinson. "Winning back-to-back Player of the Year awards is very impressive."
After guiding his team to the best record in conference play and first regular season title in school history, Parkinson was rewarded by his peers with the Coach of the Year honor for the second time in the last three seasons. Parkinson's squad finished with a school-record 15 league wins and went 11-1 on their home court, the fewest losses in the Jungle in the Jags DI era (since 1998). Parkinson's team also won a DI era record 13-straight games during the conference season.
Senior point guard Hoopingarner earned Second Team All-League honors after guiding the Jags to their best offensive season under Parkinson. With Hoopingarner at the helm, IUPUI scored 72.1 points per game on the year and 74.6 points per game in conference play. Hoopingarner led the Horizon with 4.5 assists per game in league play and 3.8 per game over the season. The Greenwood, Ind., native was second in the league in assists to turnover ratio at 1.8 for the year and 2.3 during league play.
Hoopingarner finished third on the team with 9.7 points per game and 37 threes made. In the regular season finale against UIC, Hoopingarner became the 27th Jaguar to score 1,000 career points.
"It is great to see Holly recognized for her play as a senior," said Parkinson. "She led the league in assists and really sets the tone for how our team performs."
In her first season with the Jags after transferring, McLimore was voted Third Team All-League after becoming one of the best offensive playmakers for IUPUI. McLimore finished the year with 11 points per game and scored 11.9 points per game in league play. McLimore shot over 43% from the field during the season and averaged 3.5 rebounds per game.
"In my opinion, Rachel is the best wing in the league, so being on one of the all-league teams as a sophomore is very deserving," said Parkinson.
IUPUI earned the No. 1 seed in the Horizon League Women's Basketball Tournament and a bye to the semifinals. The Jags will take on the lowest-remaining seed on Monday, March 9. The game will be played at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis and will tip off at 12 p.m. ET.
