JAGS DROP TOUGH EXTRA INNING GAME TO AUSTIN PEAY, 11-10

IUPUI collected a season-high 14 hits and Rachael Gregory delivered three RBI but the Jags could not hold on to the win.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – IUPUI fell in a back-and-forth extra inning affair with Austin Peay to end the weekend at the Hilltopper Spring Fling at Western Kentucky. The Jags took a two-run lead in the top of the eighth before giving up three runs in the bottom of the inning to lose 11-10 in eight innings.

Five Jags finished with two hits as IUPUI collected a season-high 14 hits. Rachael Gregory led IUPUI with three RBI. Hailey Pop and McKenzie Loge each drove in two for the Jags.

In the eighth, Turner singled to start the inning and moved to second on a sac bunt by Pop. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Barnes doubled down the left field line to score Turner. Two batters later, Speth doubled the Jags lead with an infield single.

The Governors started the bottom of the inning with back-to-back singles and a sac bunt to put two runners in scoring position. A wild pitch brought in the first run and a double brought home the tying run. Diederich got a groundout to Turner for the second out of the inning. In the next at bat, a hard line drive went off Diederich's glove and in to center field to bring home the winning run for Austin Peay.

IUPUI scratched across two runs in the top of the first on four hits. Jaida Speth earned a leadoff single and moved to third on a double by Delaney Thompson. During Mandy Dallas' at bat, a wild pitch brought home Speth and two batters later, Rachael Gregory singled to right, scoring Thompson.

After a run by Austin Peay in the bottom of the first on a solo home run, the Jags increased the lead in the third. A two-out error by the Governors kept the inning alive as Kayana Diederich hit a ground ball to short that was bobbled. That error loaded the bases and McKenzie Loge took advantage, ripping a double down the right field line that scored Hailey Pop and Megan Overton.

The lead was short-lived as Austin Peay scored three runs in the bottom of the inning with the big hit coming as a two-out, two-run home run.

In the top of the fourth, IUPUI began the inning with a walk by Thompon and after two outs, another walk, this one drawn by Amber Pagan kept the inning going with a walk. Pop singled to left to load the bases but Barnes drive to right center field was caught on the warning track to end the threat.

The Jags took advantage of another bases-loaded situation in the fifth. Diederich walked to start the inning and Thompson was hit by a pitch with two outs to keep the inning alive. After Dallas walked to load the bases, Gregory singled through the right side to bring home two runs. IUPUI wasn't done, Turner walked on four pitches in the next at bat and Pop delivered with a single to center to bring home Gregory and Dallas, putting the Jags up 8-4.

Austin Peay was not ready to quit, scoring two more in the bottom of the fifth and threatening with two runners on before Diederich picked up a strikeout for the second out of the inning. In the next at bat, a drive to left center field was snagged by a running Loge on the warning track to keep the Jags up two.

Looking to close out the game, IUPUI allowed two runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game in to extra innings.
