JAGS BATS GO COLD IN FIRST DAY OF HILLTOPPER SPRING FLING

IUPUI was shutout against Illinois State and Western Kentucky to begin the weekend tournament.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – IUPUI softball's offense struggled to get going in the cold weather, getting shutout in two games to start the Hilltopper Spring Fling at Western Kentucky on Friday (Feb. 28).

Both Jaida Speth and Mandy Dallas finished the day with two hits but the Jags were shutout for the first time all season, stranding seven runners between the two games.

ILLINOIS STATE 5, IUPUI 0

IUPUI could not get the bats going against Illinois State, only mustering one hit against the Redbirds. Illinois State's starter Morgan Day threw a complete game shutout and struck out 18 Jaguars in the game.

The Jaguars only got two runners on base, the first coming from a single by Jaida Speth in the fourth inning. Delainey Turner drew a walk in the top of the fifth but neither runner for IUPUI got in to scoring position.

Kayana Diederich fell to 2-2 on the season with the loss. The freshman allowed four earned runs on eight hits and gave up two walks while striking out one batter.

Illinois State jumped out early with a solo home run on the third pitch of the bottom of the first and scored runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

WESTERN KENTUCKY 7, IUPUI 0

Mandy Dallas led the Jags with two hits but IUPUI could not get anything across the plate, getting shutout by the Hilltoppers 7-0 to end their first day at Western Kentucky.

Dallas was one of four Jags to get a hit as IUPUI collected five in the game but IUPUI stranded five runners.

Jaida Speth collected the first hit for the Jags in the top of the inning and stole second but was stranded after a ground out and a strike out.

Western Kentucky got on the board first in the bottom of the inning with one run.

In the second, Dallas doubled to right and advanced to third on an error, but again was stranded. In the third, McKenzie Loge walked with one out and advanced to second on a ground out but another groundout left her on second.

The Hilltoppers broke the game open against starter Lexi Lucas (1-5) with four runs in the bottom of the third. A throwing error was responsible for the first run and with two outs, WKU hit a two-run home run and a solo shot in back-to-back at bats to take a 5-0 lead.

IUPUI managed just two more hits the rest of the way as Western Kentucky scored runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to get to the final score.
