INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI women's basketball dropped its first home game of the season as a comeback effort fell short against Green Bay. The Jags had two looks at game-tying threes but both attempts were blocked in the final seconds.
IUPUI () was led by
Macee Williams, who posted her 13
th double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Destiny Perkins scored a season-high 15 points and was instrumental in helping IUPUI climb back in to the game in the final minutes.
Rachel McLimore also finished in double-figures with 10.
Holly Hoopingarner added nine points.
"I thought this was the Destiny's best game here at IUPUI," said head coach
Austin Parkinson. "I thought we played with a lot of intensity the last part of the game. Green Bay played well. They played with desperation like they wanted the two seed."
The Jags found themselves down by 12 with 2:21 left in the game before upping the defensive pressure and clawing back in to the game.
Ali Berg hit a free throw to start the run and Perkins stole the inbound pass, hitting the layup and drawing the foul. Perkins missed the free throw, one of seven missed by IUPUI in the game and the deficit remained at nine.
After a miss by Green Bay, Perkins drew a shooting foul and hit both free throws to make it 60-53. Perkins again swiped the inbounds pass and hit Hoopingarner, who drilled a three to make it a four-point game. After another missed basket by the Phoenix, Hoopingarner hit a pull up jumper to make it a one-score contest.
IUPUI gave a foul with 10 seconds left on the clock and Green Bay's Haley Oskey, who was shooting over 84% from the line on the season, missed the first and hit the second to make it a three-point game.
In the Jags' next possession, Berg took a three with five seconds left that was blocked but went out of bounds off Green Bay. With three seconds left, the ball went to Perkins in the corner but her shot was also blocked and Green Bay collected the loose ball as the clock ran out.
IUPUI held the lead for the whole first half and most of the third quarter but IUPUI went scoreless for more than three minutes in the third quarter as Green Bay pulled ahead. The Phoenix outscored IUPUI 18-12 in the third quarter, using an 8-0 run to surge ahead.
The Jags shot 42.6% from the floor but struggled both beyond the arc (6-for-21) and at the free throw line (6-for-13). Despite winning the battle on the offensive glass 10-5, IUPUI only managed five second chance points to seven for Green Bay.
After holding Green Bay to just 26.7% shooting in the first quarter, IUPUI allowed Green Bay to shoot over 54% in each of the last three quarters. The Jags struggled with Green Bay's guards, Frankie Wurtz (17 points) and Hailey Oskey (13 points) and also could not stop Madison Wolf who had 12 points on 6-for-7 shooting and pulled down 10 rebounds.
"The bottom line is your best players have to play like your best players," said Parkinson. "We have been very good at that but if we play one-on-one defense like that in the tournament we will be back home quickly."
