EL PASO, Texas – IUPUI got off to an exciting start at its tournament in UTEP on Friday (Feb. 21). The Jags dropped their first game to New Mexico State before beating UTEP in extra innings to close out day one.
IUPUI 8, UTEP 7 F/8
IUPUI picked up its first victory of the weekend with an 8-7 win in eight innings against the host UTEP. The Jags scored five runs in the top of the eighth and hung on for the victory, allowing four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Kayana Diederich picked up her second win of the season throwing a complete game, allowing six earned runs on eight hits. Diederich finished the game with three walks and three strikeouts.
Rachael Gregory continued her strong start to the season, going 3-for-4 for at the plate and scoring two runs. Six different Jaguars drove in runs against the Miners with Jaida Speth driving in two.
After giving up one run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game, the Jags found themselves in their first extra inning game of the season. Playing international tiebreak rules, McKenzie Loge was placed on second. Singles by Gregory and Jordan Barnes brought home Loge to score IUPUI's first run of the inning but the offense wasn't done.
After a strikeout, Delainey Turner singled to right to score Gregory before a big hit by Speth. Speth triple to left field to score Turner and Barnes and the sophomore would score two batters later on a single by Hailey Pop to put IUPUI 8-3.
UTEP started the bottom of the inning with a back-to-back singles to score a run and then a three-run home run that pulled the Miners within one and no outs. After a single, the tying run was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Diederich struck out the next batter looking and then got the final batter to ground out to clinch the win.
New Mexico State 12, IUPUI 1 F/5
The Jags trip to El Paso got off to a rough start as the Jags were downed by New Mexico State 12-1 in five innings. IUPUI did not help their cause in the game, leaving nine runners on base in the loss.
The Aggies jumped on the Jags early with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. After a sacrifice fly brought in the second run of the frame, a double and a single brought home two more runs.
A two-out home run in the bottom of the second put New Mexico State up 6-0 and another two run home run in the third increased the lead to 8-0.
IUPUI's lone run of the game came in the top of the fourth with Sabrina Trevino doubling to right and two batters later, Jaida Speth brought home Trevino.
In the fourth inning, the Aggies took advantage of three walks and a bases-clearing triple was the big strike, making the game 12-1.
The Jags managed to get two runners on with walks in the top of the fifth but IUPUI couldn't bring any runs across and the game ended after five innings.
Delainey Thompson had the best day at the plate with a 2-for-2 afternoon and a walk. Mandy Dallas also reached base all three at bats with one hit and two walks.

IUPUI will play two games on Saturday (Feb. 22) with a game against Omaha at 4 p.m. ET before taking on UTEP at 6:30 p.m. ET.
