JAGS BEAT PURDUE FORT WAYNE 80-59 TO START #HLWBB SEASON 2-0

Macee Williams posted a double-double for the third time this season as IUPUI completed the sweep of the Mastodons.

INDIANAPOLIS – Behind three players in double-figures, IUPUI improved to 2-0 in Horizon League play with an 80-59 win over Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday (Dec. 13). Macee Williams led IUPUI in scoring with 22 points.

Williams, who hit the 20-point mark for the third time this season, also pulled down 10 rebounds for her third double-double this year. Natalie Andersen scored a season-high 14 points on 4-for-5 shooting from deep and Rachel McLimore also tallied 14 points, doing most of her damage in the fourth quarter. Sydney Roule tallied eight points with two threes and Trinity Duckworth scored a season-best seven.

IUPUI (4-1, 2-0) entered the fourth quarter up 61-43 but Purdue Fort Wayne used a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 11. The Jags responded with an 8-0 run that featured four points from McLimore to push the lead back up to 19 and the Jags would cruise the rest of the way to the win.

"I thought Purdue Fort Wayne showed tremendous heart and competitive spirit in today's game," said head coach Austin Parkinson. "It was nice to see us utilize Macee inside, particularly in the second half. We have to do a better job taking care of the ball if we want to improve as a basketball team."

After shooting 50 percent from the floor in the first game against the Mastodons, IUPUI did even better tonight, going 29-for-52 (55.8 percent) from the floor. IUPIU had two quarters, the second and fourth, where the Jags shot at least 70 percent. The Jags were also solid from deep, going 9-for-22 from long range (40.9 percent) and went 13-for-15 from the free throw line.

Ball movement was again a key for IUPUI as the Jags finished with 21 assists on their 29 made baskets. Destiny Perkins led IUPUI with four assists, while Andersen, Duckworth and Katelyn O'Reilly each had three. The ball movement led to easy buckets down low as IUPUI finished the game with a 36-28 advantage in the paint.

With Williams gobbling up rebounds again, IUPUI held a 36-20 advantage on the boards and three other Jaguars finished with four rebounds. The Jags managed to turn their 13 offensive rebounds in to 18 second chance points.

The game got off to a slow start for both teams, with IUPUI holding just an 11-9 advantage after the first quarter. The Jags were just 4-for-13 from the field and Purdue Fort Wayne went 3-for-11.

The offense for IUPUI heated up in quarter two thanks in part to Andersen. Anna Mortag began the quarter with a jumper before Andersen scored the next eight points for IUPUI as the Jags pushed the lead to 21-13. Duckworth added a three for the Jags followed by another three for Andersen and after two Duckworth free throws the lead grew to 16.

With under three minutes left in the half, McLimore and Williams combined for 10 points and IUPUI took a 15 point lead in to the half.

The defense continued to lock down Purdue Fort Wayne holding the Mastodons to 39 percent shooting in the quarter, which is what the Mastodons also finished shooting for the game.

IUPUI will remain at home for the next weekend of conference games as the Jags will welcome Cleveland State to the Jungle for games on Saturday (Dec. 19) and Sunday (Dec. 20). Both games against the Vikings are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
