JAGS OVERCOME POOR SHOOTING TO PUSH WIN STREAK TO NINE

IUPIU beat Cleveland State despite a poor performance from the floor during IUPUI's second-annual Class on the Court

INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI offense struggled but the Jags found a way to win their ninth-straight game, beating Cleveland State 58-48 on Thursday (Jan. 30). The Jags tied the longest winning-streak in program history in the DI era (1998-99) and the second-longest winning streak in school history.

IUPUI (15-6, 9-1 Horizon) did so, led by Macee Williams, who finishing with 16 points on 7-for-15 shooting. Williams was the only other Jaguar to finish in double figures as Rachel McLimore, Sydney Roule and Katelyn O'Reilly all added nine.

Cleveland State (15-6, 5-5 Horizon) held the Jags to just 33.3% from the field and hit only 24% from the three point line.  Both numbers are the lowest IUPUI has put up during the winning streak. IUPUI also made tings difficult on itself going just 6-for-13 from the free throw line, a season-low 46.2%.

"Give credit to Cleveland State, I thought they were really active defensively," said head coach Austin Parkinson. "Tonight we didn't make a lot of shots, missed free throws, but at the end of the day we defended well enough."

Parkinson's squad can credit a strong defensive effort to keep Cleveland State at bay as IUPUI held the Vikings to just 48 points, a season low. Mariah Miller did score 19 points on 9-for-14 shooting for Cleveland State but the rest of the Vikings went just 10-for-37 from the field. Only five Vikings scored on the day and Cleveland State also went 4-for-15 from three point range.

IUPUI's biggest advantage came on the glass as the Jags outrebounded Cleveland State 49-34. IUPUI also finished with a 22-7 advantage on the offensive glass that led to 14 second chance points. Katelyn O'Reilly led IUPUI with a season-high 12 boards. Rachel McLimore tied her career-high with eight rebounds and Holly Hoopingarner and Williams each had seven.

The Jags took a five point lead in to the half but midway through the third quarter, a three-point play by McLimore and back-to-back baskets by Morgan Allen put the Jaguars up 12 at 40-28. Cleveland State managed to work back in to the game, cutting the lead to nine at the end of the third.

Williams was the Jags go-to at the beginning of the fourth, scoring IUPUI's first six points of the final frame as the Jags tried to hold off the Vikings. One of the biggest plays of the game came after Williams drew a chance for a three-point play with three minutes left and IUPUI up nine. Williams missed the free throw but McLimore grabbed the offensive rebound and later in the possession, Roule hit a three to put IUPUI up 12.

The Jaguars won the turnover battle 20-14 and held the advantage on assists 16-8. McLimore led all Jags with four assists.
