Blevins Postgame
INDIANAPOLIS - IUPUI sophomore
Renae Blevins notched her first collegiate goal and the typically stingy Jaguars' defense made it stand as the women's soccer team authored a 1-0 shutout win over Eastern Kentucky at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Thursday night (Sept. 5). Blevins recorded the game-winner on a free kick in the game's 31st minute while redshirt freshman
AP Woodall and senior
Sophia Lipka each dialed up scoreless halves in net as the Jags posted a fourth shutout in the season's first five games.
The win improved the Jaguars to 3-1-1 to start the season while EKU dropped to 1-4. It was IUPUI's first-ever win over the Colonels in three meetings between the two schools.
EKU was the more dangerous team in the opening portion of the match, but the Jaguars broke the tie after head coach
Chris Johnson went deep into his bench late in the first half. Freshman
Grace Moore drew a foul just beyond the top of the Jaguars' 18, setting up Blevins' game-winner. Blevins calmly drove a shot to the left of the Colonels' three person wall and just inside the left post, eluding EKU goalkeeper Billie Clark's diving attempt.
Blevins had narrowly missed a number of opportunities as a freshman in 2018, before finally cashing in in her 24th career appearance.
Woodall continued her brilliance in net in the first half, extending her personal scoreless streak to 245 straight minutes before giving way to Lipka at the start of the second half. Lipka was far less tested in the second half as the Jaguars controlled pace and possession for much of the final 45 minutes. However, IUPUI was unable to find insurance, despite some clean looks from freshman
Autumn Weeks and junior
Miranda Ricks. Blevins had a nearly identical free kick opportunity in the game's 71st minute, but drilled a shot right into the stomach of Clark from 20 yards out.
IUPUI put seven of its 10 attempts on target as both Blevins and Weeks had three shot attempts. EKU outshot the Jaguars 12-10, despite IUPUI finishing with an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Woodall made five saves and improved to 2-0-1 on the season while Lipka needed just one save in the second half. Lipka's lone save preserved the shutout in the 86th minute when Monica Rios tested her with a free kick, deep in Jaguars' territory.
IUPUI improved to 2-0-1 on its home turf this season and benefited from a strong student crowd on Thursday as part of Women's Soccer Spirit Night, presented by the IUPUI SAPB. More than 600 fans cheered the Jaguars to victory, largely consisting of students.
IUPUI will cap the weekend at Central Michigan on Sunday (Sept. 8) when they take on the Chippewas at 1:00 p.m. Eastern in Mount Pleasant.
