EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The IUPUI women's soccer team got a late strike from sophomore
Elizabeth Bueckers and a clean sheet from goalkeeper
AP Woodall in her return to the Pocket City as the Jaguars outlasted Evansville, 1-0, on Sunday (Sept. 22). Bueckers drove a shot off the inside of the far post and into the back of the net in the 77th minute, helping end a frustrating run of close calls and near misses, dating back to Friday's Horizon League opener.
Senior
Emma Chambers setup Bueckers' winner for her first point of the season.
The Jaguars built their share of offensive chances in the second half, beginning with what appeared to be an obvious penalty kick call as an IUPUI (6-3-1) attacker was pulled down well inside the penalty box, but to no avail. Instead, the play ultimately resulted in a yellow card for the typically mild mannered
Chris Johnson as he continued to plead his case for the next several minutes. Later in the 62nd minute, freshman
Autumn Weeks nearly got on the end of a loose ball amongst a scrum in the Jaguars' penalty area, but was unable to make clean contact and her attempt squibbed in the direction of the post. Junior back
Natalie McNally was almost able to finish from there, but the ball stayed out of the UE (1-7-1) net.
The 70th minute saw freshman
Grace Moore get free on the back side of a build, but her attempt went just over the bar from 15 yards out.
Just minutes after taking a hard kick to the ribs on an Evansville foul, Buckers got the last exasperated laugh by firing her ninth career goal on her only shot attempt of the game.
"It was definitely relieving," Buckers said. "I had been getting beat up all game, so it felt really good to finally put the ball in the back of the net."
At the other end of the field, Woodall made five saves and benefited from a McNally save off the line in the first half. Her best save of the game came in the 79th minute when she plucked a long Amanda DaSilva restart on a short hop to keep the Aces off the board.
Woodall, from nearby Chandler, Ind., recorded her third shutout of the season and improved to 3-0-1 in net.
"I was very excited to play against my hometown college," Woodall said. "We came out and did what we had to do to get the shutout and that is one of the best feelings."
Freshman
Maya Lacognato led the IUPUI attack with three shots and junior
Valentine Pursey had two attempts. Evansville outshot the Jaguars 12-10 and 6-3 on frame while the Jags closed with a 5-1 edge on corner kicks.
IUPUI improved to 3-0 this season against Missouri Valley Conference foes, having previously knocked off Southern Illinois and Valparaiso.
IUPUI will resume Horizon League play next Saturday (Sept. 28) when it treks to Youngstown, Ohio, to face Youngstown State at 1:00 p.m..
