YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The IUPUI women's soccer team put up a statement at Youngstown State on Saturday (Sept. 28), tallying three goals and a clean sheet as the Jaguars rolled over the Penguins, 3-0 at Farmers National Bank Field. Junior
Jillian Steinbrink came up from her defensive spot to deposit the game-winner in the game's opening few minutes and
Elizabeth Bueckers and
Natalie McNally added late insurance as IUPUI improved to 9-0 all-time against YSU.
IUPUI improved to 7-3-1 overall and 1-1 to open Horizon League play this season.
The Jags, who have been notoriously slow starters so far this campaign, used virtually no time to take the lead on Saturday. Steinbrink, a defender, blasted a shot from distance off a
Morgan Rymer feed in the fourth minute past YSU's Kate McEachern for the winner and her second career goal.
Steinbrink's shot was the Jaguars' fourth in the opening four minutes as the attack came out primed for production after netting just one goal in the past two matches combined.
"I got to revisit my forward days for a few seconds with a shot that was setup perfectly by Morgan. I noticed the goalie was off her line and decided to try a shot from 30 yards out and honestly, did not expect it to go in," Steinbrink said. "I was really happy we could get a lead early on in the game. The whole team got behind the ball after that and kept Youngstown out of our net to earn the shutout.
"We work extremely hard to keep possession and build an attack at every position on the field and it showed today."
The Jags controlled possession and limited YSU's (2-8-1, 0-2 HL) opportunities, outshooting the Penguins 22-7 and 10-3 on goal. Senior goalkeeper
Sophia Lipka kept the hosts off the board with a stop on a Sydney Ossege shot late in the first half.
Bueckers extended the Jaguars' lead just after halftime, tallying her fourth goal in IUPUI's last five games.
Emma Chambers and
Valentine Pursey combined to setup Bueckers' strike as she tied Pursey for the team lead in goals.
Junior back
Natalie McNally made it 3-0 in the 75th minute, taking an assist from
Renae Blevins to tally her second goal of the season.
Lipka made three stops before giving way to redshirt sophomore
Emily McGrath for the final 10-plus minutes of the contest.
Pursey had a game-high six shot attempts as head coach
Chris Johnson was able to rest some of his regulars and offer extended minutes to some reserves. All total, 22 different Jaguars saw game action, which included McGrath's season debut.
IUPUI will now return home to host UIC on Wednesday (Oct. 2) at 7:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. That match will be broadcast on ESPN3 as Andrew Kappes describes the action. Admission is FREE for IUPUI students and just $5 for general admission adult tickets.
