HOUSTON - The IUPUI men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 overtime road loss at Houston Baptist on Saturday night (Sept. 21), yielding a restart goal in the 94th minute to the Huskies' Daan Snellink. HBU also got a second half goal from Tim Ugo while
Yan Souza, the reigning Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week, netted the Jaguars' lone score off a
Landon Malott assist.
The match venue and kickoff time were both changed earlier in the week with torrential rain forecast for the Houston area.
"It's a disappointing result for our team tonight. However, I continue to be proud of our resilience when the game isn't going our way," head coach
Brian Barnett said. "Give credit to HBU for defending their penalty area and capitalizing on our mistakes in critical moments of the game.
"They are a far better team than indicated by their record as they have played an incredibly tough schedule."
IUPUI (2-2-1) took an early lead in the 17th minute when Souza took a feed from Malott and slipped a shot past HBU keeper Jorge Guzman for his team-high third score of the season. The lead held until just after halftime when Ugo beat sophomore keeper
Quinn McCallion with a strike for his first score of the season.
The game went into overtime, albeit briefly, before HBU (2-4) got the golden goal off Snellink's foot in the 94th minute. Snellink blasted a restart goal past McCallion for his first score of the season, sending the hosts home victorious.
HBU outshot the Jaguars 10-7, but IUPUI's
Gianni Catenacci fired a team-high four shot attempts from his defensive spot.
The game was played largely between the 18's as neither team dominated possession. HBU finished with 54 percent of the game's possession, while IUPUI was in their attacking half of the field for 57 percent of their possession.
IUPUI will return home to begin a quick two-game homestand, beginning with a non-conference tilt with Xavier on Tuesday night (Sept. 24) at 7:00 p.m.. IUPUI students with a valid Crimson Card will receive a FREE adidas t-shirt, while supplies last. T-shirt distribution will begin at 6:05 p.m. inside Carroll Stadium. Tuesday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ as Andrew Kappes (pxp) will describe the action.
