INDIANAPOLIS - Xavier's first possession on Tuesday night (Sept. 24) would provide the night's only offense as the visiting Musketeers tallied less than 90 seconds into the match and fended off the Jaguars, 1-0 at Michael A. Carroll Stadium. XU's Karsen Henderlong blasted a low liner past IUPUI's
Quinn McCallion and into the lower right corner of the net for his fifth score of the season in the game's second minute as Xavier (4-2-1) held on, 1-0.
"When you host a top 30 nationally ranked team and concede a goal in the opening five minutes against a team like Xavier that is really good in possession, you make it hard on yourself to get a result," head coach
Brian Barnett said. "I give our kids credit for showing some fight and resolve and staying in the game and creating chances. However, ultimately, we didn't create any chances that were dangerous enough to put a challenge on frame.
"Credit Xavier as well. They did an outstanding job of continuing to play possession and in terms of killing the clock and finishing off the game."
IUPUI (2-3-1) had chances against one of the nation's top teams to start the season, but was ultimately held off the scoreboard.
Henderlong took a long lead pass from Grant Dumler, turned into open space and took two touches before zipping a shot past McCallion. Henderlong continued to pester the Jaguars' defense throughout the first half, as Xavier's methodical attack dominated pace and possession. Henderlong tested McCallion with two more shots on goal before halftime, with the Jags' keeper stopping both.
IUPUI had enough scoring chances including a flurry off a restart where
Corey Goede headed the ball back into danger and
Riley Shives hit a solid left-footed strike, but was unable to get the attempt through traffic. Late in the half,
Gianni Catenacci and
Fernando Borges played a gorgeous two-man game up the left side, resulting in a well delivered cross from Borges to
Cameron Petersen at the back post. However, Petersen's shot attempt sailed well high of target.
The Jags' best scoring chance of the second half came on another Catenacci restart from the left flank. This time, junior
Tommy Patacca got on the receiving end and he fired a header, just over the bar. Even as the match ended, an IUPUI cross nearly found a sprinting
Landon Malott in the mouth of the net, but XU keeper Matthew Rosenberg beat the Jaguar attacker to the ball, just ahead of the final horn.
Xavier closed with a 13-8 shot advantage and 6-0 edge on frame. Matthew Rosenberg didn't have to make a save in the shutout while McCallion was solid, making five stops in net for the Jags.
The loss dropped IUPUI to 0-5-1 all-time against Xavier.
IUPUI will cap the two-game homestand on Saturday, Sept. 28 when the Jaguars host Green Bay in Horizon League play at 1:00 p.m.
