MEN'S SOCCER TO OPEN HORIZON LEAGUE PLAY AT NKU

Jaguars to face the Norse on Saturday night (Sept. 14) at 7:00 p.m.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - The IUPUI men's soccer team will begin Horizon League play on Saturday night (Sept. 14) when the Jaguars trek to Northern Kentucky for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff. IUPUI comes in with a 1-1-1 mark after last weekend's convincing 2-0 win over Purdue Fort Wayne. 

MATCH INFO 
  • Saturday's match will be the Horizon League opener for both teams. In fact, the match is one of four Horizon League openers on Saturday as Cleveland State will face Oakland, Milwaukee will be at Detroit Mercy and Green Bay will play at UIC. 
  • The match will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. and be broadcast on ESPN+. In addition, live stats will begin right at kickoff. 
THE SERIES
  • IUPUI is 3-3-3 all-time against Northern Kentucky and won last year's meeting, 2-1 in overtime in Indianapolis to secure a spot in the Horizon League Tournament. Alan Aguilar scored the game's first goal in the 59th minute on a PK and then freshman Corey Goede tallied the game-winner in the 100th minute off an assist from Cameron Petersen
JAG SCRATCHES
  • Aguilar fueled the Jaguars' 2-0 win over Purdue Fort Wayne, tallying goals in the 61st and 64th minutes. The winner came off assists from Gianni Catenacci and Fernando Borges and he added insurance just more than three minutes later by converting the fourth penalty kick of his career. 
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Quinn McCallion has been brilliant through three games, registering a 0.62 goals against average and 11 saves in 290 minutes of action. He registered his first shutout of the season against Purdue Fort Wayne. 
  • Junior back Tommy Patacca has yet to come off the field so far this season while Catenacci and sophomore back Ethan Diedel are tied for second on the team with 263 minutes of action. 
  • IUPUI went 5-10-4 last season and 4-3-1 in Horizon League play, earning a spot in the league's postseason tournament. The Jags then won the program's first postseason match since 2007 by upsetting Green Bay in the opening round. IUPUI later took eventual league champion UIC to penalty kicks in the semifinals round. 
  • Dating back to last season, IUPUI is 3-1-2 in the last six matches, having closed last season with back-to-back wins over Northern Kentucky and Green Bay, followed by a draw with eventual league champion UIC in the Horizon League Tournament. 
  • The Jaguars were picked to finish seventh in the Horizon League, according to the league's preseason polls.  
  • IUPUI returns its top two scorers from a season ago in senior midfielder Alan Aguilar (11 points) and sophomore back Corey Goede (eight points). In addition, McCallion (1.22 GAA) returns in net and five other starters - Tommy PataccaCameron PetersenAnthony Saporito, Shives and Pedro Valladao - all return. 
  • All total, IUPUI returns 14 of the team's 17 goals from a season ago. 
  • Head coach Brian Barnett is in his fourth season on the Jaguars' sidelines. 
SCOUTING NKU
  • NKU is 1-2-1 to start the season and 0-0-1 at home, having played Marshall to a 1-1 draw on Sept. 2. The Norse are coming off a 2-0 win at Canisius on Sept. 8.
  • Alex Willis leads the Norse with two goals and Connor Probert, who scored against the Jaguars last season, has a goal and an assist. Probert leads NKU with 22 shot attempts and nine on goal. 
  • Baj Maan has played every second in goal for the Norse, recording a 1.36 goals against average and 19 saves in 398 minutes of work. He has a .760 save percentage, having yielded six goals total. 
  • Stu Riddle is the NKU head coach, entering this season with a 78-81-25 career mark in 10 years on the sidelines. He's been at the helm of the NKU program for two seasons and had previous head coaching stints at Buffalo and Western Michigan.
