INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team opened the much anticipated 2019 season with a double overtime thriller, playing California Baptist to a 1-1 draw at Carroll Stadium on Friday (Aug. 30). Senior Yan Souza tallied a go-ahead goal early in the second half, only to see the visiting Lancers tie the score with 12 seconds left in regulation before the game ultimately ended in a draw.

Souza got free in the 56th minute for his third career goal, firing a right-footed shot from just inside the top of the 18 easily past CBU (0-0-1) goalkeeper Albert Escuin. Freshman Kirezi Freddy got the play going by ripping a drive off a CBU defender, only to have the ball deflect to Gianni Catenacci. Catenacci touched to Souza, who laced a shot through traffic into the lower right-hand corner of the net.

From there, the IUPUI (0-0-1) team went into defensive mode, hunkering down and allowing sophomore goalkeeper Quinn McCallion to keep things clean in front of him. While the Lancers dominated possession, the Jags were comfortable allowing the guests to fire fruitlessly from distance. The strategy worked until a corner kick in the closing seconds of regulation knotted the score. Rafael Vacas Barba got on the finishing end and poked a shot just past McCallion from in close, thwarting the Jaguar keeper's bid for a fifth career shutout.

"Ultimately, we put the guys in the right positions and it's just a matter of having to execute," head coach Brian Barnett said. "It's August so you can understand it, but when it gets to September and October and the games really matter, we need to execute and understand that that's the difference in getting a result."

IUPUI was outshot 19-8 on the day and 4-0 in overtime, but rarely were the attempts particularly dangerous. McCallion finished with five saves while Escuin had four stops for the Lancers.

Souza and fellow Brazilian Pedro Valladao had a team-high two shot attempts while Catenacci collected his second career assist.

The Jaguars will return to action on Friday, Sept. 6 when they travel to Bradley for an 8:00 p.m. Eastern kickoff at BU's Shea Stadium.
