PEORIA, Ill. - Host Bradley used the IUPUI men's soccer team's preferred method for success against them on Friday night (Sept. 6), tallying an early goal and fending off the Jaguars from there as the Braves won, 1-0. Bradley's Gerit Wintermeyer tallied the game-winner in the game's 26th minute on a set piece, accounting for the night's only offense.
The loss snapped the Jaguars' four-game unbeaten streak, dating back to last season.
"It was a tale of two halves for us on the night," assistant coach
Ronnie Bouemboue said. "I thought we competed much better in the second half than we did in the first."
Bouemboue piloted the club on Friday as head coach
Brian Barnett stayed back in Indianapolis as he and his wife await the birth of their third child. Barnett, a Peoria-native and longtime former Bradley assistant, was hoping to make the trip but ultimately decided to remain in Indy.
Wintermeyer and Jha'Lon Johnson played a two-man game on a corner kick, ultimately resulting in the former curling a shot past IUPUI sophomore goalkeeper
Quinn McCallion. It came on Bradley's third of 10 corners on the night while the Braves also closed with a distinct 14-7 shot advantage.
IUPUI's (0-1-1) lone shot on goal came in the 14th minute when senior midfielder
Alan Aguilar had an initial attempt blocked by a Bradley defender. The rebound came to freshman midfielder
Chris Workman, who tested BU keeper Nathan Wisbey, only to have the shot saved.
IUPUI had early opportunities in the second half as
Fernando Borges had a pair of attempts early in the stanza and later setup a
Caleb Hussain header in the 65th minute with a well delivered corner kick. However, Hussain's attempt went wide of target.
Defending their 1-0 lead, the Braves successfully killed the game and controlled much of the possession late in the contest. McCallion continually turned away Bradley attempts down the stretch, finishing with five saves.
Borges had a team-high two shot attempts in the defeat.
IUPUI will return home to host Purdue Fort Wayne on Sunday (Sept. 8) at Carroll Stadium. Admission is just $5 for ages 13-and-up and just $2 for youth, ages 3-12.
