INDIANAPOLIS - Butler's Katie Soderstrom scored twice and assisted on two second half goals as the host Bulldogs rolled past IUPUI, 4-1 at the Sellick Bowl on Sunday night (Aug. 25). IUPUI got a late goal from junior Valentine Pursey in the loss, falling to 1-1 on the young season.

Butler (2-0) broke the ice and then took control in a matter of 40 seconds in the 25th minute of the first half. The first goal came when senior keeper Sophia Lipka challenged hard to her right, well off her line to make a sliding stop of an initial shot attempt. However the rebound came back to Butler's Macy Miller, who rolled a cross to Soderstrom at the far post. Given time and space, Soderstrom easily deposited a shot into the right side of the net for her first score of the year. Less than a minute later, Anja Savich sprung Soderstrom free with a long feed up the right side. This time, Soderstrom angled a shot in front of Lipka, just inside the far post for her second score of the match.

Offensively, IUPUI didn't muster much in the opening 45 minutes as the Jaguars were outshot 13-1 before the break. Josie Denton rolled a dangerous cross through the Butler box in the closing minute, but no IUPUI attacker was able to get on the connecting end. Moments later, freshman Renae Blevins had the Jags lone attempt, missing wide left from just inside the top of the 18.

Blevins got free Bri Denny sent a long pass to Miranda Ricks at the top of the box. However, the sophomore midfielder pulled the shot just wide of frame.

Butler added insurance at the start of the second half when senior back Annika Schmidt rose above a crowd and angled a header into the back of the net off a Soderstrom corner. In the 60th minute, the hosts continued to pile on as Becky Dean headed home another Soderstrom corner, making it 4-0.

IUPUI (1-1) broke up the shutout bid in the 77th minute when Denton served a ball from the right side to a streaking Pursey, who headed a shot just inside the near post for her 18th career score. The assist was the first point of Denton's two-year IUPUI career.

Seemingly energized by the score, Pursey just missed a second tally late in the match as she made a nifty turn on the left side and blazed a shot just over the bar in the 84th minute.

Pursey closed with two of IUPUI's five shots and Lipka finished with nine saves in a full 90 minutes.

IUPUI will return to action next Friday night (Aug. 30) when the Jaguars host Western Illinois at 7:00 p.m. at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium. The match will follow the men's contest with California Baptist, slated to start at 4:00 p.m.. Like all home events, admission is FREE for IUPUI students with a valid Crimson Card.
