INDIANAPOLIS - Pressed into action due to an injury, redshirt freshman
AP Woodall recorded a shutout in goal in her first career match as the IUPUI women's soccer team played former league foe Western Illinois to a scoreless draw. The IUPUI (1-1-1) offense had stacks of opportunities, but was unable to solve Woodall's opposite number, Ines Palmiero Herrera, who finished with six saves and faced 25 IUPUI shot attempts and 11 Jaguar corner kicks.
IUPUI (1-1-1) pinged woodwork and challenged Herrera from seemingly every angle, but was blanked for the first time in three games to start the season.
"I thought we had good effort from a lot of players. We were trying a lot of different combinations trying to find out that would produce a goal, but we just couldn't make it happen. We created some decent opportunities, but either didn't have the runner in the right place or the ball was too close to the keeper," head coach
Chris Johnson said. "I thought the back line and AP did a nice job all night and I thought
Autumn Weeks came in and won a lot of balls in the middle of the field. We will get back after it on Sunday and keep trying to find a way to put one in the back of the net."
After a fairly even start to the match, IUPUI took control of the pace and possession midway through the first half and never relinquished. Junior
Miranda Ricks got loose on a breakaway in the 34th minute and fired wide of target and later
Josie Denton got free in front of the WIU (1-0-1) goal, but had a header fly wide of frame.
The IUPUI offense knocked on the door consistently throughout the second half, including attempts by both
Emma Chambers and Weeks that hit the crossbar, but deflected high of target. Junior
Valentine Pursey rifled a game-high five shots from her midfield position, but was unable to get any on frame. Chambers and Ricks added four apiece and freshman
Maya Lacognato finished with three attempts.
Western Illinois never got a shot on target against Woodall as the starting back line of
Natalie McNally,
Jillian Steinbrink and
Jenna Sterr kept things clean. Even as Johnson dipped into the bench, play stayed consistent as the Jags never allowed a corner kick and kept the ball out of their end for much of the match. Zoe Clarke led WIU with four attempts.
The draw moved the all-time record with Western Illinois to 10-9-1 as the two teams were playing for the first time since 2016.
The Jags will cap the two-game weekend at Southern Illinois on Sunday (Sept. 1) with a 2:00 p.m. Eastern kickoff.
