DETROIT – IUPUI took a one-run lead in to the bottom of the sixth but Detroit Mercy plated four runs to beat the Jags 5-2 in the first game of the three-game series.
IUPUI (16-35, 10-10 Horizon) jumped on the Titans early as
Sabrina Trevino hit a two-run home run.
Mandy Dallas was able to draw a two-out walk to keep the inning going and Trevino took a 1-2 pitch from Ashley Mauser over the center field wall to put the Jaguars up 2-0.
Detroit Mercy got a run back in the bottom of the second after a one-out single and a double but the Titans were held in check by IUPUI starter
Dezirae Leonard for the next three innings. Leonard allowed one hit in each of the next three innings but was able to strand the runner and maintain the Jags 2-1 advantage.
IUPUI had a chance to extend its lead in the fourth inning after loading the bases with one out.
Delainey Turner grounded out but
Jaida Speth was thrown out at home for the second out of the inning. With
McKenzie Loge at the plate, the sophomore looked to hit a ground ball to center and bring home a run but
Emily Berrisford was called for interference on the base paths and the inning ended.
Holding on to a 2-1 lead in the sixth, Leonard got the first batter of the inning out but gave up a solo home run with one out to tie the game. Three-straight singles and a throwing error brought home the next run for the Titans and Detroit continued to pile on, scoring two more runs and increasing its lead to three.
