INDIANAPOLIS - Seniors
Krisztian Somhegyi and
Olivia Treski took home top honors as the IUPUI Athletics Department hosted the 2019 Jag Awards inside the Campus Center on Monday night (Apr. 30). Somhegyi and Treski were honored with the department's Melvyn Garland Distinguished Student-Athletes Awards - the highest single honor given to an IUPUI male and female student-athlete. In addition,
Kyle Whittaker (men's tennis) collected the Jaguars Athletic Fund Academic Achievement Award for maintaining the highest grade point average among this year's male senior student-athletes, while
Allex Brown (women's basketball) earned the Dorothy Cheesman Award for the top female GPA among the senior class.
Somhegyi concluded his IUPUI career as the most decorated diver in the history of the men's diving program. He was a two-time league Diver of the Year, having won four consecutive 3-meter springboard titles. He was a two-time NCAA National Championship qualifier, including become the first NCAA Championship point scorer in the history of the men's program by placing 13th in the tower competition at the 2019 NCAA Division I Championships with 309.80 points. He owns the school record in the 3-meter dive with a score of 388.55 against Ohio State in 2017 and closes his career with nine of the top-10 3-meter performances in program history. Academically, he's maintained a 3.6 grade point average while double majoring in mechanical engineering and mathematics.
Treski capped her three-year IUPUI career as a two-time gold medalist in the 1,650 freestyle at the Horizon League Championships, helping the Jaguars to a program-best runner-up finish her senior season. She closed her career with individual school records in the mile (16:44.99), 1,000 (10:02.67) and 500 freestyle (4:51.24) events. In fact, she owns the six quickest mile and 1,000 freestyle times in program history. In addition, she was part of IUPUI's 800 freestyle relay school record at the Horizon League Championships this past year, helping the group touch at 7:24.69. In the classroom, she's maintained a 3.7 grade point average while majoring in excercise science/pre-PT.
Whittaker collected the men's top academic billing by maintaining a 3.79 GPA while majoring in electrical engineering and Brown has a 3.95 mark as a marketing major.

Eric Hoffman was honored with the Sportsmanship Award. Men's soccer freshman
Quinn McCallion was named the department's Freshman of the Year after leading the Jaguars to the Horizon League Tournament semifinals, where they took eventual champion UIC to penalty kicks. The men's soccer team also earned Play of the Year honors as freshman
Corey Goede's golden goal against NKU to earn a spot in the Horizon League Tournament was the year's top moment.
Holly Hoopingarner (women's basketball) and
Bradley Luetschwager (men's tennis) earned Iron Jaguar Awards for their continued work in the weight room while
Maggie Shields (women's cross country / track & field) earned the Bob Lovell Service Award for her impact on the community.
Shields was also one of six recipients of the School of Social Work Difference Maker Awards alongside
Agatha Beier (women's basketball),
Emma Chambers (women's soccer),
Bri Denny (women's soccer),
Ashley Kidwell (women's cross country / track & field) and
Katelyn Murphy (women's cross country / track & field).
Assistant AD / Communications
Ed Holdaway was named the department's Support Staff Person of the Year and
Jamie Broce and his women's golf staff collected Coaching Staff of the Year honors after having repeated as Horizon League Champs this spring. Head coach
Antonio McDaniel and the women's cross country and track and field teams regained possession of the Jag Cup, dethroning the women's soccer team for top billing.
The department also honored Coach's Awards winners from each sport on Monday night and also recognized the eight Michael A. Carroll Scholarship Award finalists for the 2018-19 academic year.
