IUPUI SPLITS DOUBLE HEADER WITH OAKLAND ON SENIOR DAY

The Jaguars hit four home runs over the two games but could not hold on to a lead to secure the series sweep.

INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI and Oakland split a double-header on Saturday (April 13), as the two teams combined to hit six home runs in the two games. IUPUI earned a 7-1 game one victory before Oakland held off a Jaguar series sweep with a 10-9 win in nine innings.

Mandy Dallas, Sabrina Trevino and Delaney Thompson all went deep for the Jags in the first game of the day and Morgan Schuetter hit her first-career home run in the second game of the day.

IUPUI 7 – Oakland 1
IUPUI pounded out 14 hits and Dezirae Leonard was in control in the circle as the Jags began the day with a 7-1 win over the Golden Grizzlies.

Leonard picked up her second win of the season, scattering eight hits and two walks, only giving up one run and striking out two batters.

Trevino got things started for the Jags with solo home run in the bottom of the second and IUPUI added to the lead in the third. McKenzie Loge and Haley Ginger singled to begin the inning and after two-straight fly out, Trevino walked to load the bases. Jaida Speth singled up the middle to score Ginger and Loge and put the Jags up 3-0.

In the fourth, Amber Pagan led off the inning with single and moved to second on a walk. After Ginger grounded out and moved Pagan to third, IUPUI got another run as Thompson brought home the freshman with a sacrifice fly.

Oakland got their only run of the game in the top of the sixth but IUPUI quickly responded as Thompson hit a two-run home run and Dallas followed with a solo shot to put the Jags up 7-1.

Oakland 10 – IUPUI 9 (9 innings)
After tallying 14 hits in the first game, IUPUI managed to put together 15 hits in game two but came up short in a nine-inning back and forth affair to end the series.

With IUPUI up 7-4 heading in to the top of the seventh, the Jags looked set to earn the series sweep. Oakland would not go down easy as the first two runners reached on singles.

After a fielder's choice retired the runner at second, another single brought home the first run of the inning. A lineout put the Jags one out away from the win but a three-run home run in the next at bat gave Oakland an 8-7 lead.

Needing a run to keep the game alive, Emily Berrisford got the bottom of the inning started with a walk. Delainey Turner laid down a sacrifice bunt and Berrisford went from first to third as no one for Oakland covered the base. Loge flew out for the second out but Ginger kept the game going drawing a walk. After going down 0-2, Thompson delivered with a ground ball up the middle to score Berrisford and send the game to the eighth.

With Lexi Lucas back in the circle after having started the game, Lucas was greeted with a lead-off home run as Oakland took the 9-8 lead. Leonard entered the game for Lucas and Oakland managed to get a runner to third but a line drive was snagged by Leonard, who doubled off the runner at first to end the inning.

Two outs began the bottom of the inning for IUPUI and the game looked over as Taytum Schaney hit a grounder to third but an error kept the Jags alive. Berrisford singled to right to move Schaney to second and Speth delivered with a single to right center to tie the game. With the winning run 60 feet away, Loge struck out looking the game headed to the ninth.
Oakland took advantage of an IUPUI error to start the inning and a sacrifice bunt and single put the Golden Grizzlies back on top.

Needing a third-straight inning with a run to keep the game going, Ginger walked to lead off the frame. After Thompson's fly ball to right was snagged by a reaching catch, Dallas hit a line drive to short and Oakland doubled off Ginger to end the game.

IUPUI and Oakland were tied at one in the bottom of the second when took the lead on a two-run home run to left center by Schuetter after the freshman went down 0-2. The Jags added to the lead as Ginger and Loge hit back-to-back doubles in the fourth.

The Golden Grizzlies chased Lucas from the game with a three-run fourth inning but IUPUI responded in the bottom of the frame. Three singles scored the first run of the inning for the Jags with Schaney picking up the RBI. A groundout by Berrisford brought home the second run and Turner singled to right to give IUPUI the 7-4 lead.
