INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI women's tennis picked up its first Horizon League win of the season with a tight, 4-3 victory over Detroit Mercy on Sunday morning (Mar. 24).
With the win, IUPUI improves to 5-10 on the season, besting its win total from a season ago.
IUPUI took the first doubles match 6-2, with
Samantha Hayward and
Meghan Bernard winning the No. 3 match. Detroit Mercy tied the doubles competition with a 7-5 win at No. 2.
Krystal Grubb and
Gabrielle Ochalik pushed their No. 1 match to a tie break but fell 7-3 to lose 7-6 and the Titans earned the doubles point.
The Titans picked up its second point of the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 but Grubb got the Jags on the board, winning 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 5 match.
The Jags then tied up the match with Kristina Stankovic earning a 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1. Detroit Mercy took the No. 2 match and ended up one point away from winning the match.
The pressure was then on
Mariella Pessina to keep the match going and the senior earned a big win in the No. 4 match with a 6-2, 6-3 win to tie the match at three.
The match came down to the last contest at No. 6 with Bernard finding herself in a three-set match. The redshirt freshman won the first set 6-0, but dropped set two 4-6. Bernard then came through with a 6-3 win in set three to give the Jags the win.

The Jags will continue Horizon League play with a trip to Northern Kentucky on Friday (Mar. 29) and Wright State on Saturday (Mar. 30).
