SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLE HEADER WITH INDIANA STATE

IUPUI won the second game of the double header scoring six runs and Amanda Melzoni held the Sycamore offense at bay.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –  IUPUI split its trip to Indiana State with a win in game two over the Sycamore in a double header on Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 13).

IUPUI 6 – Indiana State 3
IUPUI broke a seven-game losing streak with a 6-3 win in the second game of the double header against Indiana State.

The Jags did all of their damage in the first four innings and then held on for the win over the Sycamores.

In the first inning, IUPUI put two runners on with one out and Kristin London doubled to left center to bring in both runners. McKenzie Loge followed with a single up the middle to score London and put the Jags up 3-0 after the first.

In the third, two walks and a single by Mandy Dallas loaded the bases and Loge brought in another run with a walk to put the Jags up four. Later in the inning, Morgan Schuetter singled with two outs to make it 5-0.

The Jags added another two-out run in the fourth as London doubled home Haley Ginger who had doubled to begin the inning and IUPUI gave starter Amanda Melzoni all she would need to for the win.

The Sycamores did get three runs in the fifth but that is all Indiana State could muster as Melzoni picked up her second win of the season, scattering eight hits and striking out two batters in the complete game victory.

Ginger, London, Loge and Schuetter all finished with two hits as the Jags totaled nine in the game.

Indiana State 9 – IUPUI 2
In game one of the double header, IUPUI only managed five hits in the 9-2 loss to the Sycamores. Haley Ginger had a good game going 2-for-2 at the plate and drew a walk. Jaida Speth hit her first-career home run and Sabrina Trevino singled home a run. McKenzie Loge was the other Jaguar to finish with a hit on the day.

Indiana State jumped out to a quick lead with an RBI double in the bottom of the first and doubled its lead with a solo home run in the second.

IUPUI cut the deficit in half in the fourth. After Loge singled with two outs and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Trevino singled to right field to bring home the Jags first run.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Sycamores' offense exploded against IUPUI starter Lexi Lucas. It started with a triple to lead off the inning and an infield single and stolen base put runners at second and third. The next batter singled to bring home two runs and ISU pushed its lead to 5-1 with a single in the next at bat.

The Jags got their first out on a strikeout but back-to-back singles put the Sycamores sixth run on the board.

In the top of the sixth, IUPUI managed to get one back as Speth drove a ball over the right-center field wall for the freshman's first home run of the year but ISU struck again in the bottom of the sixth with three more runs to get to the final margin.

Lucas (4-8) threw a complete game and struck out five while only walking one batter.
