OFFENSE COMES ALIVE IN IUPUI'S WIN OVER INDIANA STATE

The Jags split two games in the first day of play at the Cardinal Classic, beating Indiana State but losing to Missouri.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – IUPUI softball broke a three-game losing streak as the bats came alive for the Jags in an 8-3 win over Indiana State to begin play at the Cardinal Classic on Friday (Mar. 1). The Jags fell in the night cap against Missouri, 11-3 in five innings.

IUPUI 8 - Indiana State 3
Thanks in part to a six-run fourth inning, IUPUI broke a three-game losing streak with an 8-3 win over Indiana State. The Jags pounded out a season-high 14 hits in the win over the Sycamores as eight of the nine Jaguars in the lineup finished the game with a hit, including six Jaguars with two hits, and seven different players drove in a run.

IUPUI got things started in the top of the second inning with a two-out rally. With a runner on first and two outs, Jaida Speth got things started with an infield single and Maddie Keeley loaded the bases with another infield single. Emily Berrisford delivered the big hit with a single to bring in the first run. Haley Ginger was next at the plate and drew a walk to bring home IUPUI's second run of the game.

Delaney Thompson opened up the top of the fourth with a home run to center, her first of the season, to put IUPUI up 3-0 but the Jags were not one in the inning. A single by Speth knocked ISU's starter out of the game. After two flyouts, IUPUI again staged a two-out rally. The first run scored on a single by Mandy Dallas and another run came in after another single by Sabrina Trevino. Kristin London kept things going with an RBI double to left and IUPUI found itself up 8-0 after a two-run single by McKenzie Loge.

The Sycamores finally broke through against IUPUI starter Lexi Lucas in the bottom of the fourth after a single and a walk put to on. A double in the next at bat and a sacrifice fly pulled Indiana State within five.

Lucas buckled down after that and Indiana State did not get a runner on base for the rest of the game. Lucas picked up her fourth win of the season allowing just the three runs on six hits in the complete game win with one strikeout and one walk.

Missouri 11 – IUPUI 3 F/5
IUPUI's second game of the night was not as successful as the Jags were downed by SEC foe Missouri 11-3 in five innings. The Tigers scored a run in every inning and finished the game with 13 hits, while IUPUI did not help its cause, committing five errors that led to five unearned runs.

The first run of the game for Missouri came across in the bottom of the first on an IUPUI throwing error and the Tigers opened up the lead in the bottom of the second. With two runners on and one out, a double drove in two to make the score 3-0. That was followed by a two-run home run to put Missouri up 5-0.

Four more runs for the Tigers in the bottom of the third put the Jags down 9-0 and Missouri went up 10-0 after another run in the fourth.

The Jags needed three runs to keep the game going in the top of the fifth and IUPUI staged another two-out rally. After Maddie Keeley reached on a fielding error, both Emily Berrisford and Haley Ginger walked to load the bases. Mandy Dallas singled to bring home two runs and IUPUI was one run away from keeping the game going. Another single by London meant IUPUI forced Missouri to bat in the bottom of the inning.

Missouri started the inning with a single and after a throwing error on a stolen base moved the runner to third IUPUI looked in trouble. The Jags got two outs but a single to short brought home the game winning run.
