HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The IUPUI women's golf team opened the spring schedule this week at the Motor City Cup, placing fourth overall in the eight-team bracket play event. The Jaguars defeated Northern Kentucky in the opening round to stay in the winner's bracket before dropping matches to Youngstown State and Loyola to fall to a fourth-place finish.
Amelie Svejda and
Sloane Winders led the Jaguars with two wins apiece and junior
Marion Debove earned a win and a draw over three rounds.
"It was great to be back out on the course with the team after sitting out a couple tournaments in the fall due to injuries. It showed that all of the work I put in over the winter on my mental game and swing changes paid off," Winders said. "Even though I wasn't 100 percent, I exceeded my expectations for my first tournament in about four months. I'm excited for the rest of the season and can't wait to see what it brings."
The event was played at Mission Inn Resort, site of the 2019 Horizon League Golf Championships. Head coach
Jamie Broce's Jags forfeited a point in all three matches as they played without a No. 6 player throughout the week. However, the short-handed Jaguars won four of the five matches in the opener to get past NKU. At the top of the lineup, Debove played Macy Wright evenly through 18 holes to halve a point. Debove never led, but won No. 16 and played the last two holes evenly to split her match.
The middle of the Jaguars' lineup was dominant though as Svejda defeated NKU's Lillian Young 4&2 and Winders edged Kylie Lysack, 2&1. Ball State-transfer
Reece Malapit made quick work Caitlyn Tasney by a 7&5 margin and senior
Elizabeth Orr defeated Delaney Welsh, 5&4. Svejda was all square early, but won three of the final four holes on the front nine and the first two holes of the back nine to take a five-hole lead and coast to the win.
In round two, top-seeded Youngstown State breezed past the Jaguars, 5-1 in a match that was halted due to darkness on Monday and played to completion on Tuesday. Debove captured IUPUI's lone point by winning at the No. 1 spot in the lineup, 1-up. Svejda's match came down to the final hole as she was defeated 1-up, but the other three matches weren't nearly as close.
On Tuesday, IUPUI fell to Loyola by a 4-2 count with Winders and Svejda accounting for the two victories. Howard and Malapit's matches came down to the final hole before both were defeated 1-up.
The two-day, 54-hole tournament was formed by the league's coaches to give teams an advance look at this year's Horizon League Championship course. Five teams from the Horizon League made the trip as YSU, Oakland, NKU and UIC were in attendance, along with teams from Loyola, Valparaiso and Creighton.
The Jaguars will return to action on Feb. 24-26 when they compete at the Kiawah Island Spring Classic at Osprey Point and Oak Point on Kiawah Island.
