INDIANAPOLIS – IUPIU jumped out in front of Cleveland State early and never looked back, winning wire-to-wire in a 64-36 win against the Vikings on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 10).
The Jags were led by a career-high 15 points from
Sydney Roule who hit a career-high five threes. Roule is the first Jaguar to hit five threes this season.
Morgan Allen also finished with a career-high 14 points, going 6-for-10 from the field. Both
Holly Hoopingarner and
Macee Williams finished one point shy of double-figures, marking just the second game this year Williams has not scored at least 10 points.
IUPUI turned the jets on midway through the first quarter after Cleveland State hit a basket to make the game 5-4. The Jags would score the next 13 points with the run led by six points from Allen.
Tamya Sims, who finished with eight points, started the run and her and Allen traded two baskets each. Allen added another layup and Roule hit her first here to put the Jags up 14.
"I thought our bench sparked us early," said head coach
Austin Parkinson. "I thought
Agatha Beier came in to the game and really got the ball moving up the floor and
Morgan Allen did a great job sealing inside from an offensive standpoint."
The Jags pushed their lead to 17 at the beginning of the second quarter with
Katelyn O'Reilly hitting a layup and Roule dropping another three. The Vikings would cut it to 12 halfway through the quarter but IUPUI closed out the half on an 8-2 run, including a 6-0 run in the last two minutes to take an 18-point halftime lead.
Two-straight buckets by Williams pushed the lead to 19 in the third quarter and a Hoopingarner three gave the Jags a 22-point advantage with four minutes left in the third.
Threes by Hoopingarner and Roule sandwiched an O'Reilly layup that put IUPUI up 58-31 three minutes in to the fourth quarter. IUPUI would push its lead to a game-high 29 after a three by Beier with five minutes left in the game.
IUPUI held Cleveland State to season lows for Jaguar opponents in both points scored (36), field goals made (12) and field goal percentage (24.5). IUPUI also forced 22 turnovers, one shy of the season-high of 23 the Jags forced in the season opener.
The Jags owned the glass against Cleveland State, pulling down 46 rebounds, led by eight from Williams. Roule matched her career-high with seven rebounds, while O'Reilly and Sims each added six.
IUPUI has now won six-straight home games by at least 20 points and has done so by moving the ball. The lowest assist total during the current run was 16 against Northern Kentucky on Dec. 30. Against Cleveland State, IUPUI assisted on 20 of its 25 made baskets with O'Reilly and Hoopingarner each dishing out five helpers. O'Reilly's five assists are a career-best in a Jaguar uniform for the Noblesville, Ind., native.
"The Jungle has always been a spot where we have played really well," said Parkinson. "This year it's great to be back playing the way we are capable of in here and I think the ball has moved really well and its always good to be at home."
IUPUI will now hit the road for the next two weekends as the Jags play their final three road games of the season and look to clinch a home quarterfinal game in the Horizon League Tournament. IUPUI will begin the stretch with a contest at Oakland on Thursday (Feb. 14) with tip-off at 7 p.m.
