MUNCIE, Ind. - IUPUI was held to a frigid 30 percent shooting and saw Ball State stroke it at 55 percent as the host Cardinals rolled over the Jaguars on Saturday inside Worthen Arena, 102-54. Jarron Coleman led Ball State with a career-high 20 points in just 19 minutes and Ishmael El-Amin added 18 points for the victors. Ball State connected on 15-of-34 (44.1 percent) from three-point range as five BSU (5-4) players finished in double-digits.
Junior
Jaylen Minnett had 17 points for IUPUI while
Grant Weatherford and
Elyjah Goss both finished with 10 points. Minnett finished 6-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-7 from deep, extending the nation's third longest streak of games with at least one trey to 46 straight. Goss just missed a double-double with nine boards while Weatherford grabbed seven caroms for the Jags. The Jaguars' top scorer,
Marcus Burk, was held to just six points on 2-of-8 shooting before fouling out in 24 minutes.
Offensively, the Jaguars labored throughout, collecting just two assists on 19 buckets while committing 16 turnovers. Ball State distributed 20 assists on 32 field goals and outscored IUPUI 62-30 after the break as they shot 65 percent in the second half.
"It starts at practice," Goss said as the Jaguars look ahead to a mini two-game homestand after only playing two home games thus far this season. "We're not doing the right things we need to do to win games, so it starts in practice.
"We need to get stops on defense. You have to have pride. Teams are going to make shots, but we just have a problem too much of when teams make shots, it starts to take our energy away. We've got to limit bringing our energy down and keep playing through it when teams make shots."
Ball State (5-4) ripped off a 14-3 run early in the half to build a 21-10 lead at the 9:39 mark, fueled by eight points from El-Amin. The hosts later closed the half with a 7-0 run to take a 40-24 lead into halftime.
IUPUI made just one shot in the opening seven-plus minutes of the second half before Minnett finally made a three at the 12:29 mark. At that point, the Jags trailed 58-36 and the outcome was well in hand.
Ball State hit its final two three-point attempts of the game, including a corner connection from Josh Thompson to go over the century mark in the game's final minute.
Zo Tyson collected four points and two boards in limited action and
Jamil Jackson Jr. finished with three points and two rebounds after missing the past two games to injury.
Jakoby Kemp and
Isaiah Williams each added a bucket in the loss.
The loss dropped the Jaguars to 5-10 all-time against Ball State and extended the current losing skid to six straight since the Nov. 13 win at South Florida.
IUPUI will return home to open a two-game homestand on Tuesday night (Dec. 10) when the Jaguars host IU South Bend at 7:00 p.m. inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum. That contest will be aired on ESPN3 as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) and IUPUI Hall of Famer Bob Lovell (analyst) are on the call. Tickets are available online via
TicketMaster or by visiting the Coliseum box office during normal business hours.
