INDIANAPOLIS - Junior
Elyjah Goss broke the IUPUI single-game record with 21 rebounds to go along with a career-high 17 points and the Jaguars put five players in double-digits in rolling past IU South Bend, 80-60, inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Tuesday night (Dec. 10). Junior
Marcus Burk led all scorers with 21 points and
Jaylen Minnett chipped in 15, all from beyond the arc.
Jamil Jackson Jr. finished with 11 points off the IUPUI bench and
Isaiah Williams finished with 10 points in the win.
Kourtlandt Martin was the lone IUSB player in double-figures with 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting.
The win snapped the Jaguars' six-game skid. IUPUI opened the game with the first four points on jumpers from Williams and Burk and never looked back in a wire-to-wire victory.
"It just felt good to get the win," Jackson Jr. said after his season-high scoring effort. "It felt good for me to just get back on the court and be able to contribute like I did tonight."
"I wanted to come out and give us energy from the beginning, whether it's by getting rebounds or getting loose balls or scoring when I get the chance," Goss said. "It was good to get off to a fast start tonight and kind of go from there."
Goss set the tone from the outset, notching a double-double before the game was 10 minutes old, including flushing a two-handed slam off a Minnett miss to make it 22-8 at the 10:19 mark of the first half. The lead grew to 26-11 before IUSB scored seven straight points to cut the advantage back to eight. However, IUPUI closed the first half with an 18-4 run, which included back-to-back threes from Minnett and Burk late in the stanza to push the lead to 44-22 by halftime.
IUSB, which was playing the game as an exhibition, offered little resistance in the second half as they crept no closer than 15 after halftime.
Burk and Minnett combined to hit 10-of-20 from three-point range as IUPUI shot 37 percent from beyond the arc on the night. Defensively, IUPUI forced 25 turnovers and collected 13 steals, led by
Mike DePersia's three thefts.
Down the stretch, the only suspense surrounded whether Goss would set the single game record for caroms. His record tying 20th rebound came with 40 seconds left when Sam Snodgrass misfired on a three and his record breaking 21st came 30 seconds later when Dane Simatovich missed on a three point attempt of his own. Goss became just the third player in program history to grab 20 boards in a game and the first to do so since Michael Boles grabbed 20 against IUSB in 1993.
IUPUI grabbed 22 offensive boards and outscored the Titans 22-9 on second chance points as the Jags dominated the glass, 49-39. The Jags also had an uncharacteristically strong night at the free throw line, connecting on 14-of-19 (73.7 percent) attempts and outscored IUSB 14-2 at the stripe.
With the win, IUPUI improved to 12-1 all-time against IUSB and 4-0 in the program's Division I era.
IUPUI will cap the two-game homestand on Saturday (Dec. 14) when the Jaguars host Purdue Fort Wayne at 12:00 p.m. inside Indiana Farmers Coliseum on Holiday Hoops Day. Saturday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+ as Greg Rakestraw (pxp) and Hall of Famer Bob Lovell (analyst) are on the call. Tickets are available via
TicketMaster or at the Coliseum box office during regular business hours.
