DETROIT, Mich. - Playing with an already razor thin margin for error, the IUPUI men's soccer team came up shy in a critical Horizon League matchup at Detroit Mercy on Friday night (Nov. 2), ultimately falling in double overtime, 1-0. UDM's Demetri Pliakos took advantage of an IUPUI miscue and fired the winner into an open net, vaulting the Titans into the upper tier of the league standings with one game yet to play.

UDM and IUPUI (4-9-3, 2-4-1 HL) entered play tied in the standings, so neither side was particularly interested in a draw. The game was ultimately decided at the start of the second overtime when IUPUI sophomore goalkeeper Quinn McCallion mishit a punt, putting the ball at Pliakos' feet with nothing but open real estate in front of him. McCallion charged off his line to alter the shot angle, but Pliakos bent a shot over the keeper and easily inside the far post from long distance for his second score of the season.

Detroit Mercy elevated to No. 4 in the league standings while the Jags to the No. 8 spot among a tightly bunched pack.

Neither side was particularly dangerous in the attack in the opening 45 minutes, but the game almost immediately opened up at the start of the second half. Junior back Tommy Patacca tested UDM keeper Devin Mendez with a drive from distance in the game's 48th minute, forcing the host goalie to punch the attempt just over the bar. On the ensuing corner kick, senior Alan Aguilar pushed a shot just wide of target.

IUPUI's only other shot on goal came in the 65th minute as Yan Souza had an attempt saved by Mendez.

McCallion finished with three stops, making two before halftime and a third in the opening overtime period. The Jags fended off some harrowing moments in the opening overtime session as Pliakos had a shot stopped by McCallion and UDM's Kyle Bandyk missed with a header wide of target in the 100th minute.

Detroit Mercy finished with a 16-11 shot advantage while the two sides were whistled for a combined 38 fouls as the game lacked true rhythm.

IUPUI will cap the regular season by hosting Wright State on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. That contest will be aired on ESPN+ as well.
