INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team's 2019 season came to an end on a frigid Friday night (Nov. 8) as the Jaguars dropped their home finale to Wright State, 6-1. Both teams were still in play for a berth in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament, but ultimately, the visiting Raiders hemmed up a spot in short order, fueled by a dominating first half.
Wright State's Deri Corfe had a hat trick, including the game-winner, and Jackson Dietrich tallied twice and added an assist in the win. IUPUI junior back
Tommy Patacca had the Jaguars' lone score, tallying on a free kick late in the first half.
Wright State (8-7-2, 4-4 HL) came out on the offensive and put away the game's first goal in the 17th minute when Dietrich blasted a left-footed shot past
Quinn McCallion for his fifth score of the season. Just more than five minutes later, Corfe scored from nearly the exact same spot on the field, angling a shot past McCallion from just outside the 18-yard box in the 22nd minute. Later, the Jaguars' defense gave Corfe far too much space and the Raiders' top scorer made them pay as he looped a shot over McCallion in the game's 30th minute for a 3-0 lead.
IUPUI (4-10-3, 2-5-1 HL) showed signs of life just before halftime when
Tommy Patacca drilled a free kick from the top of the 18 past WSU keeper Joel Sundell for his third score of the year. However, if Patacca's tally left the door ajar, the Raiders immediately slammed it shut at the start of the second half.
In the opening minutes of the half, Deri Corfe had a tough angled shot ring off the near post and pop free inside the Jaguars' six-yard box. An errant clearance ended up in the back of the IUPUI net for an own goal and a 4-1 Wright State lead. Just more than a minute later, Dietrich scored off a nice feed from Stefan Rokvic in the 50th minute and the game's final score came in the 51st minute.
On the final score, Rokvic played Corfe into space and the WSU attacker maneuvered past McCallion and then slotted an easy score between a pair of retreating defenders to finish off the hat trick.
Wright State finished with a 27-11 shot advantage and 14-2 advantage in shots on goal. McCallion closed with nine saves while Sundell's lone save came in the final seconds as he easily plucked a
Yan Souza attempt.
Corfe accounted for 10 of the Raiders' 27 shot attempts and Dietrich fired five more. Four IUPUI players had two shots each, including Souza and
Pedro Valladao, each playing in their final collegiate games. Souza finished the season with a team-high 10 points while
Alan Aguilar was next in line with nine points. McCallion closed the season playing every second in goal for the Jaguars with a 1.84 goals against average and 84 saves in his 17 starts.
