VERONA, Wisc. - The IUPUI men's and women's cross country teams will head to Wisconsin to compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course on Friday (Nov. 15). The women's 6K race is slated for 11:30 a.m. Central (12:30 Eastern), followed by the men's 10K race at 12:30 p.m. (1:30 Eastern). Individuals and teams are seeking berths to the upcoming NCAA Championships, to be held in Terre Haute on Nov. 23.
Head coach
Chuck Koeppen's team is coming off winning the Horizon League Championship two weeks ago and subsequently entering the NCAA Great Lakes Regional polls in the No. 11 spot following that victory. Koeppen's squad got a first team all-league finish from
Alex Ratkovich (6th overall) and freshman
Brennan Butche earned the league's Freshman of the Year Award to help spearhead the victory. However, it was ultimately the Jaguars' depth that secured the program's first league title since 2015 and the program's first-ever Horizon League title. Three others -
Nate Kaiser (10th),
Ben Savage (12th) and
Eric Hoffman (17th) - earned top 20 finishes with Butche, Kaiser and Savage all earned second team all-league finishes. The Jaguars cleared second-place Oakland by 19 points and third-place Youngstown State by 24 points.
On the women's side, head coach
Antonio McDaniel's team got all-league efforts from
Katelyn Murphy (1st team) and
Morgan Fleming (2nd team) to pace the lineup. Junior
Janine Orvis just missed an all-league spot by placing 18th overall while the remainder of the lineup was filled by new faces. True freshman
Claire Mehling was 29th overall and classmate
Ashton Chase capped the scoring five by placing 38th. Veterans
Paige Boatright and
Jean Carson earned their spot in the regional lineup as the Jaguars' Nos. 6 and 7 runners, respectively.

Regional Notes: The IUPUI men's program has a pair of top-10 regional finishes, placing ninth in 2014 and eighth in 2015. Both of those top-10 finishes came on the heels of Summit League titles - the first conference crowns in program history... McDaniel's team has never finished higher than 18th at the Great Lakes Regional, having placed 18th in 2013 behind Rachel Zajac's 55th place finish...
Robert Murphy owns the program's highest regional finish, having placed 17th overall in 2016, running the 10K in a school record time of 30:47.3... Tom Ohlman owns the second-best 10K in school history, having run 30:48 in 2014... Zajac and
Zoey Johnson have IUPUI's highest individual finishes on the women's side, both having placed as high as 51st at the regional championships... Zajac was 51st in 2011 and Johnson matched the effort in 2016... Johnson's school record time of 21:19.0 is the quickest time in school history at a regional championship.
