INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team came up on the wrong side of a 1-0 decision in Tuesday's (Oct. 8) meeting with Illinois State at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Both teams came in boasting high powered offenses and lengthy winning streaks, but the visiting Redbirds eeked out the game's lone goal in the 61st minute when Natalie Vaughn-Low snuck a shot just inside the near post past redshirt freshman AP Woodall off a cross from Kate Del Fava.

IUPUI (9-4-1) had more than its share of opportunities, outshooting the Redbirds 16-15 overall and putting six shots on target, but ultimately was unable to sneak one past ISU keeper Haley Smith as the Redbirds won a seventh straight game.

Illinois State (9-4) controlled the start of the game, including getting a Abby Basler restart to ring off the crossbar after Woodall punched the attempt into the air. After being shelled for much of the opening 15 minutes, the Jaguars finally turned the tables near the midpoint of the half and settling into an offensive flow. The Jags' best scoring chance came in the 32nd minute when junior back Natalie McNally was shut down at the doorstep and then rookie Maya Lacognato was unable to get a clean touch with Smith out of position to make a save. Even as the ball caromed out deep, freshman Maya Turner misfired on an attempt from distance.

Illinois State got the winner early in the second half when Del Fava found space up the right side and shifted a pass to a streaking Vaughn-Low. From there, Vaughn-Low blasted a shot past Woodall for her third tally of the season. That came just minutes after Elizabeth Bueckers just missed opening the scoring as she bent a shot from the right side just wide of the far post in the game's 55th minute.

IUPUI continued to put the heat on the Redbirds, largely behind Lacognato and Valentine Pursey in the attack. In the 64th minute, Lacognato got free and put an attempt on frame from the right flank. Smith stopped the shot, but had the ball sneak behind her and then roll wide of target, completely untouched.

Illinois State showed mettle late as they didn't allow the Jaguars much of any possession, opting to play long ball after long ball over the top of the IUPUI attackers, while also killing the clock via long runs to the Jaguars' corner flags.

Smith closed with six stops for the Redbirds while Woodall made four saves in net for the Jaguars. Lacognato attempted a game-high six shots while Basler had three for the victors.

The loss broke the Jaguars' perfect 3-0 record against Missouri Valley Conference schools this season and marked just the third time the Jags had been shutout this season, with all three coming at home.

IUPUI will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 12 when the Jaguars take on Oakland University at 1:00 p.m. in Rochester, Mich.
