INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team was unable to muster much of an attack against a tough Bowling Green State side on Tuesday night (Oct. 8), ultimately falling to the Falcons, 1-0. BGSU (7-3-1) netted the winner just before halftime as Kale Nichols slid a shot past sophomore netminder
Quinn McCallion for the night's only offense.
IUPUI (3-5-2) was limited to just five attempts and two on frame while Bowling Green had 15 shot attempts and nine corner kicks, eight of which came in the opening 15 minutes.
"When we have the ball in their defensive end, our attacking half of the field, we have to find ways to create more dangerous chances and threaten opponents on frame," head coach
Brian Barnett said. "We need to be able to turn our stretches of possession into positive opportunities within the run of play."
The Jaguars' attack was unable to solve the Falcons' high defensive line and stalwart goalkeeper Anthony Mwembia, who patrolled much of IUPUI's aerial attack from his back line. IUPUI's reliance on long throws and restarts was thwarted by the BGSU keeper, who picked off a number of Jaguar drives from his back line.
BGSU got the game's lone goal on a quick throw-in from deep in IUPUI territory, late in the first half. Chris Brennan whipped in a long throw along the endline to Chris Sullivan, who sent a back heel inside the Jaguars' six-yard box. Achille Robin flicked a pass towards the far post, where Nichols roofed a shot, easily past McCallion.
McCallion, coming off a career-high 13-save performance at Milwaukee over the weekend, was his typical brilliant self, stopping seven shots on Tuesday night. He preserved the 0-0 score in the game's early going, facing a myriad of shots and restarts, repeatedly denying attempts from all angles.
Offensively, the Jaguars' best attempt of the night came in the closing minutes as
Matthew Skaar flicked
Yan Souza onside at the left edge of the 18-yard box. Souza hit a sinking drive at Mwembia, who went to the ground and deflected the attempt just over the crossbar. Mwembia's only other save of the game came on a Souza attempt in the 58th minute.
Souza, IUPUI's top scorer, accounted for three of the Jaguars' five shot attempts.
Nichols closed with a game-high four shot attempts for the Falcons, putting two on target. Brennan and Charlie Maciejewski had three each for BGSU.
IUPUI will return to action for a pivotal Horizon League contest on Saturday (Oct. 12) when the Jaguars take on Oakland University at 4:00 p.m. in Rochester, Mich. That match between a pair of Horizon League unbeatens, will be aired on ESPN3.
