ROCHESTER, Mich. - A listless performance led to the IUPUI men's soccer team's most lopsided loss of the 2019 season on Saturday (Oct. 12) as the Jaguars were toppled at Oakland, 4-0, in a battle of Horizon League unbeatens. However, Oakland emerged superior, powering home three of their four goals after halftime to remain undefeated in league play at 4-0-1 at the top of the league standings. The Jags dropped to 2-1-1 at the midpoint of league play.
"Hats off to Oakland. They are a good team with a dynamic attack and they did exactly what you are supposed to do when you are top of the league and it's homecoming - they beat us 4-0 in a dominating performance," head coach Brian Barnett said. "I'm looking forward to having a week to prepare for Cleveland State next Saturday."
Oakland (6-4-2, 4-0-1 HL) grabbed the lead in the 21st minute when Dylan Borczak knocked home a rebound after Cameron Wilde's initial attempt hit off the underside of the crossbar. The Jags were still in the game until the Oakland offense began to run roughshod over the guests in the second half.
Noah Jensen scored on a penalty kick in the 52nd minute, chipping a change-up past sophomore goalkeeper
Quinn McCallion to double the Golden Grizzlies' lead. Borczak setup a Charlie Braithwaite score in the 74th minute and the hosts added a late tally in the 88th minute to cap the scoring.
IUPUI tried to break up the shutout in the 72nd minute when
Yan Souza made a quick turn at the top of the Oakland box, but had his shot go just wide of frame. In the 81st minute,
Carson Shrader got loose against OU keeper Sullivan Lauderdale, but the netminder made a sliding stop of the attempt before the ball was cleared to safety.
Oakland finished with a 21-6 shot advantage and 11-2 margin on corner kicks. The Golden Grizzlies put 10 shot attempts on frame as McCallion closed with six saves, giving him 26 in IUPUI's last three contests.
Junior defender
Gianni Catenacci led the Jaguars with two shot attempts in the loss.
IUPUI will return home to host Cleveland State next Saturday (Oct. 19) at 4:00 p.m. at the on-campus Carroll Stadium. IUPUI will recognize the senior group of
Alan Aguilar,
Michael Buck,
Tommy Driscoll, Souza and
Pedro Valladao before Saturday's contest at approximately 3:15 p.m.
