MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The IUPUI men's soccer team weathered storms, both figuratively and literally, as the Jaguars escaped Milwaukee with a 2-2 double overtime draw against the host Panthers on a rainy Saturday night (Oct. 5). The Panthers unloaded an offensive barrage that saw them close with 34 shot attempts and 18 corner kicks, but sophomore goalkeeper Quinn McCallion authored a brilliant performance with a career-high 13 saves, many of which were of highlight reel quality. Junior Gianni Catenacci finished with a goal and an assist and senior Yan Souza delivered his team-high fourth score of the year in the draw.

"The whole team played together as a group tonight. That's what makes us great - we play as one," Catenacci said. "We are always working for each other and not worrying about our individual performance. It showed tonight as we fought back from being down twice. Our team truly is a special group of guys.

"Quinn was outstanding and was one of the main reasons we stayed in this game. He really makes us feel secure in the back and is a very important part of our squad. A great team performance got us a crucial point tonight."

IUPUI (3-4-2, 2-0-1 HL) remained undefeated in Horizon League play and equalized twice after the Panthers took one-goal leads on two different occasions.

Milwaukee (5-5-1, 1-2-1 HL) dominated possession in the first half, outshooting the Jags 13-2, but neither side was able to scratch. The Panthers took advantage of a prime opportunity in the 50th minute when a Jaguar committed a foul just outside the Milwaukee penalty area. On the ensuing kick, Vuk Latinovich blazed a shot past McCallion for the game's first score.

As they've done so many times already this season, conceding a goal seemed to invigorate the Jags' attack and they ultimately drew even in the 64th minute. On a corner kick, the ball seemed to be headed out of play before Riley Shives saved possession and hit a back heel to Pedro Valladao. Valladao sent a cross well beyond the far post to Catenacci, who looped a pass to Souza. From there, the Brazilian attacker headed a shot easily past Milwaukee goalkeeper Freddy Lorenzen.

Milwaukee wasted little time in regaining the lead, this time on a strike from Suad Suljic. Evan Conway made a nifty turn on an IUPUI defender before sliding a pass to Suljic on the left flank. From there, the Milwaukee striker was able to make a move before drilling a shot just off McCallion's outstretched fingertips and just under the crossbar.

IUPUI was able to gain some traction from there, ultimately leading to Catenacci's first career score. The Jags earned a restart from the right side, leading to Catenacci drilling a low liner through traffic that ultimately went untouched before settling in the back of the net.

From that point forward, McCallion was the star of stars, making save after save to keep the game tied. Latinovich pinged the left post in the 85th minute on a restart and McCallion made a stunner late in regulation, flinging his body diagonally to block a Joshua Kidder attempt on the doorstep in the 89th minute.

Kidder tested him again on a drive in the 97th minute and Andreas Sorensen had one stopped by McCallion in the 99th minute.

IUPUI's best attempt in overtime came in the 102nd minute when Shives nearly snuck an attempt inside the left post after getting free straight away from the Milwaukee net.

McCallion may have very well saved his best for last, knocking down a Latinovich drive from the top of the 18 in the final second of the match, earning well deserved high fives and hugs from teammates as the final horn sounded.

Latinovich attempted 11 shots, putting five on frame, while Conway had six attempts for the hosts. Shives had a team-high five shot attempts while Souza closed with three.

In addition to the shot attempts that piled up, the two teams were whistled for a combined 46 fouls and four yellow cards. Much of the match was played in a driving rain storm as gusty winds wreaked havoc, particularly in the first half.

IUPUI will return home to host Bowling Green in non-conference play on Tuesday night (Oct. 8) at 7:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium. The game is part of a soccer doubleheader as the match will be preceded by the women's game with Illinois State at 4:00 p.m..
