INDIANAPOLIS -
Tommy Patacca and
Alan Aguilar scored goals and sophomore goalkeeper
Quinn McCallion recorded eight saves as the IUPUI men's soccer team played Western Illinois to a 2-2 midweek draw on a chilly, wet Wednesday night (Oct. 30) at Carroll Stadium. IUPUI (4-8-3) overcame deficits on two different occasions, but ultimately had to settle for a draw against the former Summit League foe.
IUPUI capped the four-game homestand with a win and a draw in the non-conference portion, following last week's win over Cincinnati and Wednesday's draw.
"I'm proud of the guys' resolve to come back off the mat twice after going down a goal," head coach Brian Barnett said. "I thought the second half and overtime were better in terms of our ability to create scoring opportunities and creating dangerous chances. I thought we did a lot of good things out there tonight and took a look at some different individuals and different combinations, particularly in the second half."
IUPUI yielded the game's initial goal in the 12th minute, giving up a penalty kick when a WIU (4-11-1) attacker was pulled to the ground well inside the penalty area. Paul Kirdoft made the most of the opportunity, sending a shot easily past McCallion to kick off the scoring. Less than nine minutes later, IUPUI pulled even on a restart of their own. Patacca blistered a shot past an ill conceived defensive wall, leaving WIU keeper Timothy Trilk frozen in his tracks as the drive ended squarely inside the far post for the junior's second score of the season.
Things stayed even until the 41st minute when Kyle Owen redirected a shot past McCallion off a Cesar Cosio corner kick, giving the Leathernecks a lead they'd maintain for more than 40 minutes.
IUPUI thought its pulled even in the 79th minute when a corner kick came to the feet of
Tommy Driscoll, who drove a shot into the WIU goal for an apparent equalizer. However, an IUPUI foul negated the score and kept the guests in front.
The Jags wasted little time after that though, pulling even in the 82nd minute on a brilliant combination play up top.
Riley Shives worked up the right side before centering a pass to
Yan Souza. Souza then slid a pass to senior
Alan Aguilar, who snuck a shot through from close range for his fourth score of the year.
IUPUI had the better run of play in the overtime periods, outshooting WIU by a 7-4 margin in the final 20 minutes, to no avail.
Shives, Patacca and
Pedro Valladao had three shot attempts each while Daisuke Otsuka and Enric Ferrer had a game-high four each for Western Illinois.
Barnett's club will now return the attention to Horizon League play when the Jaguars take on Detroit Mercy on Saturday night (Nov. 2) at 7:00 p.m. in the Motor City. IUPUI is locked in a three-way tie for the sixth spot in the standings, alongside both Milwaukee and Detroit Mercy. Only the top six teams will qualify for the upcoming Horizon League Tournament.
