INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's soccer team put up a dominant showing on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 27), reeling in Wright State with an impressive 3-0 victory at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium. Junior
Valentine Pursey netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner in the 18th minute, and sophomore
Elizabeth Bueckers added a late insurance score to all but seal the victory. Defensively, senior
Sophia Lipka tied the IUPUI program record with a 21st career shutout as she registered nine saves and an assist in the win.
Wright State (10-4-2, 5-3 HL) came into play ahead of the Jaguars in the standings, but the two sides left even in the standings with the Jags owning the tiebreaker by virtue of Sunday's win.
"I'm proud of our young ladies. I thought we came out with the appropriate energy level necessary to really take the game to them early and get on the board first. We've continued to talk about being more efficient in the attack and I thought today was better in that regard," head coach
Chris Johnson said. "I'm pleased with how we played and I thought we did a lot of things really well."
Pursey tallied the winner when she got on the receiving end of an
Emma Chambers corner kick, early in the match, and easily slipped a shot past WSU goalkeeper Maddie Jewell. Pursey added her second score of the game in the 49th minute when she was awarded a penalty kick after being pulled down while trying to get on the receiving end of service from junior back
Jillian Steinbrink. The center official immediately pointed to the spot and Pursey never hesitated in terms of stepping over the kick and then burying the attempt for her team-high seventh score of the season.
IUPUI (11-6-1, 5-3 HL) capped the scoring in the 79th minute when Bueckers got loose on a counter, beginning with Lipka's long throw to
Abbie Schad. Schad carried the ball up the right side before centering a pass to Bueckers, who chipped a shot just out of Jewell's reach.
IUPUI had the heat on the Raiders from the outset as Pursey's goal came on the Jaguars' third corner kick of the match's early going. Chambers launched a pass to the far post where Pursey redirected a shot past Jewell as the IUPUI senior midfielder collected her third assist of the season. The Jags didn't find the game's second score until Pursey's PK in the 48th minute, which was her 24th career score.
Given a two-goal lead, play opened up as the Raiders chased their first goal and the Jags tried to melt away the contest. The Jags did catch a break when a potential WSU goal was nullified due to an infraction called inside the Raiders' six-yard box on an apparent restart score.
IUPUI outshot the Raiders 22-15 overall and finished with an 8-7 edge on corner kicks. Lipka continued her season-long brilliance with timely saves and her first career assist late in the contest. With her 21st career shutout, Lipka moved into a tie with IUPUI Hall of Famer Jamie Farrell for the program record.
IUPUI will cap the regular season next Friday (Nov. 1) when the Jaguars host Green Bay at 2:00 p.m. at Carroll Stadium.
