INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team yielded a goal less than a minute into Sunday's contest (Oct. 27) and it ultimately provided a precursor for the day as the Jags fell in Horizon League action, 7-1.

Bukola Abdulwahab recorded a hat trick and both Bar Hazut and Nkusuwila Zulu each had a goal and an assist for the Flames. UIC outshot the Jaguars 24-7 and recorded a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks in cruising to the victory. Hazut hit the bar with an attempt in the game's opening seconds, only to see the rebound pop free to Abdulwahab on the right side, who volleyed a bicycle kick over his shoulder, past Quinn McCallion and into the open net.

In the 18th minute, Jose Perez Flores freed Abdulwahab with a lead pass, leading to another strike past McCallion. In the 29th minute, it was Zulu who played Hazut forward leading to his team-high tenth score of the season. Jesus Perez tacked on a gorgeous free kick in the 39th minute to make it 4-0 at the break.

UIC (11-4, 5-1 HL) was just getting started though as Abdulwahab walked the tightrope along the endline in the 50th minute and rifled a shot from a near impossible angle past McCallion to complete his hat trick.

Sophomore Riley Shives provided the Jags' lone highlight, tallying an unassisted goal in the game's 71st minute for IUPUI's only offense. An errant pass back to the keeper resulted in an IUPUI (4-8-2, 2-3-1 HL) attacker and UIC goalkeeper Sokratis Vasilas getting tangled inside the penalty area. The ball came free to Shives, who was left with an easy finish for his first goal of the season and second of his collegiate career.

Zulu added a late score in the 73rd minute and Alwin Seitz capped the day's scoring when he drove a restart off an IUPUI defender and into the open net from just outside the 18-yard box.

McCallion recorded four stops in goal while Vasilas registered two at the other end for UIC. Junior back Tommy Patacca had a team-high three shot attempts while Shives had two off the Jaguars' bench.

The seven goals allowed were the most yielded by an IUPUI team since an 8-0 defeat to Cal State Northridge back on Sept. 7, 2003.

The loss moved IUPUI into a three-way tie for the sixth and final spot in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament as both Milwaukee and Detroit Mercy also sit at 2-3-1 in Horizon League play. UIC remains atop the league standings with 15 points at 5-1. The Jaguars will have Horizon League contests at Detroit Mercy (11/2) and home against Wright State (11/8).

IUPUI will continue the four-game homestand on Wednesday (Oct 30) when the Jaguars host Western Illinois in non-conference action at Carroll Stadium. That match is slated to kickoff at 6:00 p.m..
